Well we made lemonade after the new starter turned out to be a lemon. Last night we used the trolling motor to power the boat while putting out a trot line. I had saved and frozen minnows and real small blugills that had died and we used them for bait.

We hit the water at daylight and fished our way to and from the trotline.

We had 9 cats 2 gar and a fish I couldn't Identify, It resembled a carp but the head was more rounded. We also caught 1/2 dozen small bass and a gar while coming back.

I would guess a black buffalo but with a top view only I'm not positive. It would be more of a white than yellow like a carp.

Hard to be certain, but it looks like a bigmouth buffalo. The black and smallmouth buffalos have more of that Angelina Jolie pucker sucker mouth. This one's mouth sort of looks like the bigmouth. They usually only eat tiny things, like zooplankton and insect larvae. I've seen plenty but never caught one. It's really rare to catch one, so maybe I'm wrong.

We actually do have bigmouth buffalo in our waters, along with black buffalo. There are some huge bigmouths in Percy Priest, up to 40 lbs. or more, though they're rarely caught.

The jaw on a bigmouth is very distinctive and makes them easy to identify, but I can't see it well in the pic. I'm guessing that the fish in the pic is more likely to be a smallmouth buff, since it seems to have a sucker mouth, but it's hard to tell.

Bowriter's fish looks like a black buff to me.

Me, I don know che. What I know is, them carp fish are either german or amur or some such thing and them buffalog fish are either big or little. Now as to bigmouth or black or whatever, I aint got a clue, me. What I do know is, in 2001, I caught one of them things that weighed 58 pounds. I was using 6# test line. The fish was in six feet of water on Priest.

Wish I had taken a picture. I used a cheap Bass-Pro scale. It said 58 pounds. Thas all I know.

Ah yes, both big mouth and small mouth buffalo are very common in "our" waters, well at least the Mississippi and Tennessee Rivers. I have caught both about equally from Kentucky Lake(at night under the lights at Birdsong marina on white jigs). I used to give them to my barber, whose dad was a commercial fisherman. He called the big mouth "gourdheads", which he considered to be inferior table fish and the small mouths "blue rooters", which he considered to be fine eating. If you have two species side by side, the differences are apparent.

They snagged some huge ones this year in Running Reelfoot Bayou(below the Reelfoot spillway). From the Mississippi up the Obion River up Running Reelfoot. Unfortunately these critters are going to be everywhere in a matter of a short time.
