I was wondering if I need to start practicing with broadheads instead of field points. Both match in weight so would it matter if I just kept practicing with field points and then on hunting days I just put broadheads on? I dont really want to spend money on a broadhead target but if I need to be practicing with them then I guess its my only choice.

it is rare but I have seen bad BH ferrules when I worked in a pro shop. I suggest at least checking the BHs and shooting them at least once to make sure there are not any problems. the problem can be in the insert also. once I screw my BHs on a shaft and they fly good on that shaft, I dont remove it from that shaft unless sharpening that head or replacing blades.
if your bow is tuned correctly, your BHs and FP should have the same impact. if this is the case, you can pratice with your FPs and save your BH blades.

You need to shoot your broadheads at least once to make sure they fly like your field points. If your bow is not tuned right or if the broadheads just don't suit your setup they will fly differently. You don't want to find out that your bow shoots broadheads 6 inches low and 6 inches to the left of your field points when you are shooting at a deer. Make sure they are flying right then just shoot field tips from then on. Just because your broadheads and fieldpoints are the same weight doesn't mean they will fly the same.

Thanks guys, that helps.
Is it ok to shoot my broadheads at my field point target or should I buy a broadhead target. My FP target is real thick and my draw weight is about 50# if that matters..

Always, always, always practice with your broadheads, even mechanicals. You need to know --for certain-- how the broadheads fly.
Most field point targets are not suitable for broadheads.

He should still shoot them once even if he is using slick tricks. TNhuntin93, let us know what kind of target you have. It may be suitable for broadheads and fieldpoints.

slick tricks and forget it
never had a problem grouping out to 40 yds
Sticking a Slick Trick on your arrow is not a cure all. I couldn't get them to fly that great out of my bow at all, which is perfectly in tune.
Always practice shooting broadheads before you shoot at an animal. Chances are they aren't going to fly exactly with your field points right off.
A good broadhead target I would recommend is the Morrell Yellow Jacket Broadhead Target. DO NOT shoot field points in it though.

yep i have one and i like it pretty well. and yes definately do not shoot field tips into it. it says not to on the target so naturally i had to try it  and lets just say that yeah, you can get them out but you can just about hurt yourself gettin the sucker out lol i thought i gave myself a hernia or somethin..

It doesn't matter how thick it is, what matters is what material it is made of. Is it a bag target or a foam target?

Absolutely shoot your broadheads. I have several differnt brands and models and they ALL have quirks. The most unethical thing we do as hunters is not shoot or broadheads to see if they are flying correctly. No matter how well your bow is tuned you still need to check and re-check your arrow flight.
I shoot slick tricks along with other brands and have had sporadic arrow flight because of bad inserts, nocks, broadheads and the list goes on.
If money is an issue go by the 16.00 foam target at walmart and shoot your broadheads. If you don't your next question will be how long do you wait before trailing a gut shot deer.

And I am starting to shoot out of my treestand right about now.
Don't shoot broadheads into a bag target, you'll end up having to cut them out. You'll be better off buying a target designed for broadheads.

When I go into the field, I always have brand new blades in all my broadheads...even if they've only been shot a couple of times. Leave the dull blades for practicing.

Just got home from vacation up north .  Here is a link for tips on broadhead tuning from Muzzy . It will work for any broadheads .
