Customer service is great, probably the best in the industry.
The problem lies in that half of their products are piss poor quality and tear up instantly. The other time it is back ordered until the end of time. They constantly come out with some BS marketing scam of a new rod, reel, gadget, etc. and claim it is the best ever only to change 6 months later.
They cater to the wallet "dude" who wants to look good and many times represents the sport for something which it is not.
I could write a book on Orvis, and the downfalls of them as a company. Except for their customer service which is great.
One case, the Clearwater waders, worst waders ever made, and guaranteed to leak out of the box, sure they would replace them but it didn't make up for a pitiful product. Wading boots blowing apart after 3 days on the river. Reels falling to pieces after one run from a Bonefish in Belize. Leaders showing up that were not tapered. Tippet spools which were empty. Rods which have the guides on the opposite side of the blank from the reel seat. Sorry more then one case, but maybe that will clarify.
