I admit I was very skeptical that something this simple would actually work. Basically all it is a swivel tied on to a leader
with a clear plastic "bubble float" and a second swivel and short leader tied to a treble hook. Hear is the weird part. The lure is
a 4 inch piece of soda straw.

The way it was explained to me is the soda straw bubbles and makes a funny sound when you rip or pop the lure. The Spanish Mackerel, Bonita and Trout were flat tearing it up at St. Andrew
jetties today.

where do you buy the bubble rig?

I'm planning on going to Gulf Shores the first week of August - think that would be worth buying to cast from my $20 7-foot spinning rod?

I've heard of the straw thing, but I don't understand this rig. Because of the float, is this a topwater rig? Are you just casting and reeling in? Do you have to make these or does someone sell them? Interesting.

I bought four at Half Hitch Tackle this morning. The bubble can be 1/2 filled with water and the rig will cast a country mile. Yes it is top water rig and you just cast it as far as you can and reel it back in. I had the best luck when I would stop and rip it and reel in the slack and rip it again.

would that approach be worth trying on the lagoon/bay side of Gulf Shores, or is it really only applicable on the surf side?

I'm still learning a lot about where certain types of fish hang out...

Crosshairy you will have better luck in the surf w/ that straw rig. We just got back from Orange Beach 3 weeks ago. Stayed at the Phoenix 6 down by the Perdido Pass bridge. Caught fish every morning throwing those and 3/4 oz. silver or gold spoons and of course sand fleas. Later in the week it got good in the afternoon. Huge clouds of baitfish were coming within 30 yards of the beach. Throw a spoon or that straw rig in em and you will catch fish.
I have been fishing down there for a long time and this year I got spooled took it down to the last 5 or 6 wraps and snapped. What a rush. You need good tide movement. Good luck.

I've used the bubble rig with very good success in saltwater.

I had a thought. Do you think this rig would work on white bass busting shad? I been around some pretty good jumps lately on Old Hickory and caught some really big white bass on a Little George after the school went down. I just might have to try throwing a bubble rig at the busting fish.

Saltwater fish are funny. Can't get them to hit a crankbait that looks JUST LIKE a little baitfish, but they'll hit a soda straw on a treble hook all day long.

I went to Bass Pro here in Memphis this afternoon looking for one of the bubble rigs, and they did not have any. The closest thing was a clip-on transparent bobber that you could put water in. It wouldn't work for this, unfortunately.

Should I buy them on the internet, or is it no big deal to find them for sale down there?

You won't have any problem finding them around at the beach tackle shops. Also Walmart in Gulf Shores has them too. When I was in Gulf Shores the first week of June a man fishing a bubble rig right beside me out fished me big time. I had the McDonald's straw and treble hook behind my bubble but he had a small Clark single hook spoon on his. He was catching alot more fish than us throwing the straw. I went to Walmart in Gulf Shores and bought some of those spoons and started catching more fish.

Wow, learn something new everyday. I wonder what all you could win off your buddies telling them "I bet I can catch a fish with a McDonalds straw lol. Good info and pic Kirk, thanks for sharing.

sweet, I won't bother wasting anymore time trying to pull together the right tackle in Memphis then.

Thanks for the information.

As an aside - I bought a package of those Berkley "crab" lures...they basically look like little crabs about 1.5 inches across, and are predominantly white/grey.

Is that worth using you think, or should I stick to the bubble rig the whole time?

Sorry about all the noobie questions, but I don't know diddly squat about surf fishing.

I have seen them used on trout and when you tip that hook with a night crawler and fill the bubble up just enough to get down a bout a foot, it can be a deadly walleye rig.

Up here in British Columbia I have used the “poor mans” rig as shown, and modified, several times and can attest to the fact that it works on trout.

Modifications include filling the clear float with water to sink it a foot or two or more, depending on the volume of water you fill into the float. Other modifications are to change the bare hook for a wedding band and/or drop a tiny amount of Alka-Seltzer in thesoda straw for more air bubbles. You also can bait the hook with dew-worms and shrimp.

The way it works is that the sound combined with the erratic movement mimics a fish in distress and provokes predatory fish to attack it.
