A buddy and I want to go try some good smallmouth fishing. We both live in northwest TN and don't have an aboundance of opportunities over here. My question is, in your opinion, where and what time of year is the best smallmouth fishing in the state of TN?
Just looking for some ideas to make plans for a trip in the future.
Thanks in advance.

Class VI outfitters in WV. Good as they come short of Canada. Yes, costly. Yes, 100 plus fish a day. Yes, 1st class.

Google them.

Winter time on Dale Hollow with a jig, silver buddy or float-n-fly is hard to beat for good sized fish. The same lake in the spring after spawn is good for #s, with some size mixed in. Also hard to beat the river smallie fishing in middle, middle/west TN. The Duck and Buffalo rivers produce both #s and size. I like summer fishing in rivers mainly because I wade fish and it makes even the hottest days bearable.

If you're in NW TN, you're close to Kentucky Lake which is full of smallies. See about hiring a guide out there, or just research a little bit about smallie fishing on KY Lake go out and give it a try.

I have fished KY lake for years for bass and crappie. I have only caught 2 smallmouths. I reckon I just don't know how to fish for them.

What part of the lake are you fishing? The smallie poulation does seem to be dwindling on KY Lake. Especially in the past few years. I've caught less every year for the last 4 or 5. I have been using quite a bit bigger bait over the last few years though since the big Largemouth have been coming on so strong.

There is one rule of thumb though. The further north you go the more smallies you will catch. I rarely go North of Paris Landing but I catch way more smallmouth around there than I do anywhere else.

You did say in TN, right? I don't know about the best but Tims Ford was good to me this year late winter, early spring for smallies, I caught 3 over 5 lbs. I probaly have to say Dale Hollow would be your best bet for smallies but, I'd wait til late winter, early spring. Unless you take a night trip.
