Have I got the website for you!!!
The Gar Angler Sporting Society - G.A.S.S.! Best name ever.
http://www.garfishing.com/
I love their slogan too - "America's toughest sportfish for 100,000,000 years."
Fly fishermen often use a rope fly - it doesn't actually have a hook, but the fly gets snagged in their teeth. I'm sure a similar lure could be made for conventional gear. The website has a wealth of information.

Many years ago as a young man we would take the grips off our biycycle handlebars.Cut some strands off momas mop . Then run them thru the hole and tie em off.We would catch BIG Gar up to 3 or 4 foot out of the Head waters of the Ky. river.

Gil you are a riot and great tie BTW along with a handsome Gar.
Gil's fly is perfect, and the technique is easy. Cast it close to their mouth and strip it past their face. They are not blessed with brains, and will hit until you hook them.
Great sport and especially the bigger one Gil is cradling.

Thanks Everyone. Exactly what type rope or cord? I have yellow and have a blue & white too, But these are the type I use for my anchor ropes.
Gil Great fish. That fly is cool but the nylon looks very thin I must not have the right type rope.
