Have a 7-08 Handi that I need to get dialed in.

I have been told by a couple people that those barrels tend to be rough out of the box and require "shooting in" as much as 100 rounds before they settle down and shoot well.

I was going to get some bore polish and run a couple swabs to try and take the burrs off before wasting a bunch of money and a pile of ammo.

1. Anybody ever do that?
2. What kind of bore paste to use?
3. How much polishing should it need?

Thanks!

i have used a jb paste and jewlers paste on several guns over the years, never bought the actual lapping kits.
which are sold just for this purpose.
i lapped /polished my mod 70 ot6 back in 1993 brand new, till it would not pull threads of cotton fibers off in the bore, i used portions of cotton balls put though an eyelet and then passed thru a bore to test smoothness
between lapping and polishing with a tight patch on a brass brush going back and forth in the bore about 15-20 times in each direction, then clean the bore and then check with peice of cotton balls for the hangers in the bore until i got to the point where a cotton ball peice would leave no hangers in the bore

I guess it depends on who you talk to about being rough. All three of my Handis shot well out of the box. Take it out and shoot it first, you might be surprised. One thing to remember about the Handis while shooting from the bench is to place the front bag against the trigger guard. They seem to shoot better there rather than out towards the end of the forend. Also make sure you make a full follow thru on the trigger squeeze. They seem to like that better as well.

???????
couple of passes , give it a try....
i used a product called jewlers ruoge or rouge along with jb paste
jb paste series then the jewlers rouge polish then clean then do the cotton fiber pass through test and kept on till i didnt have cotton hangers in the bore

i also have done this to my mossy 835 and it seems to make the patterns a little denser and tight by polishing up the bore for less pellet didturbance

i have also seen a product that reloaders can use that involves loading the companies special mildly abrasive bullets and firing them in the abrasive sequence until firelapped i think that is what it is called too,,,, firelapping or something like that

Good advice to be heeded.

Update.
Couldn't find fitz or JB so I put some case polish from my brass tumbler on a patch. Worked it about 10-15 times.
Followed with several dry patches, then break free, then more dry patches.

Took a Qtip and fuzzed the end until I had a good afro on the stick.
Slipped it into the chamber and it fell 1/2 way down the barrel when I turned it upside down and thumped the buttstock. Thought Uh-oh must be a snag.

Blew gently into the breech and the qtip shot out the other end.
Checked carefully and there were no cotton fibers hung up on the lands. Nice and shiny and smooth in there!

Now I am ready to load up and test some rounds.
