Buddy and me decided to shoot yesterday evening with the cool weather here. We are usually scurrying around because it is difficult to get both our wives in a good enough mood to let us shoot all day. Just happens both of them are out of town.

All together, we had:

1) Weatherby SVM, 22-250
2) Weatherby ULW, 280rem
3) Weatherby ULW, 257roy
4) S&W 460
5) A Southgate Weatherby that I had re-finished, 270roy
6) Winchester m70, 300win
7) Weatherby Vanguard sub-moa, 257roy

We stayed at 100 yards. Just taking our time and not really trying to sight in, just see how the groups were. We had a couple of new rifles and some reloads that I had worked up for our 257's.

I bought a few boxes of reloaded ammo for the 280rem and have been trying to shoot them up for a year now. I bought this rifle for a mule deer hunt several years back. It shoots the normal Weatherby groups (around an inch).

I have tried alot of different factory ammo with the rifle. This was all before triple shocks and accubonds. I plan on reloading after I finish shooting up all the reloads. I'd like to see if I can get under an inch. We'll see.

It only took 4 shots with the 22-250 to sight in. That rifle is heavy, but accurate. I got a call Monday from a relative that is having a coyote problem in her neighborhood. So I wanted to make sure I was sighted in before I go see if I can supply a remedy.

Here's the problem that I have found with Weatherby's. It is tought to beat the groups produced with their factory ammo. Case in point - we shot the reloads in our 257's that I had worked up. We both averaged 1 1/2 groups. Then we shot a box of factory ammo. Under an inch for both of us.

I am both happy and sad with my Southgate. A 50+ year old rifle, built by Roy himself on an old Mauser action. I posted some pics awhile back of what I had done to it. When I bought it, the bluing was awful. The wood was awful. The crown was awful. It was just AWFUL. I shot it a few times and couldn't get groups under 3 inches.

I had it re-blued, had the wood re-finished, had the barrel re-crowned. I really planned on putting it away for my boy to have. But the guy who did all the work on it wanted to see how it shot. 1 inch groups. It was really irritating to see 3 shots under an inch, and then fire 2 more that caused the 5 shot average to increase. I chalk that up to the shooter.

Anyways, I am happy to see it shoot so well, but sad because I really don't have plans to ever hunt with it.

We finished the evening off shooting the 460 hogleg. Not as bad as I expected. That pistol is so big, it soaks up alot of the recoil. Will be replacing the red dot. I did not like it at all. Sets up too high for me. Want to get a shot at a 4 legged critter with this bad boy!

It just felt good to go shoot. I am usually rushing to shoot a few times before the season. I can't wait to get back out again. Maybe in a few years with the kids older, I'll have more time to spend at the range. I get a kick out of reading about the shoots that you guys have. I am sure others do as well. Just thought that I'd return the favor.

Exactly how I felt with what Weatherby's I have owned also. Except mine all shot handloads and factory ammo at 1 1/2". And that is why I do not own them anymore. Plenty fine enough for hunting, but I am just anal like that.
