I'm looking at picking up a Boollit mold for my (newer, and older)50 cal's. The price of componits has gotten a little out of hand for the smoke poles. I have been pouring lead sinkers from my lead furnace with good results, and was thinking hey why not try to pour my own 50 cals to save money. Any boolit makers here that can give me some advice on molds and such? I was looking at getting either the Lee REAL 320 gr or the Lee improved minie ball mold 360 gr. What say you?
I also don't know if my lead is too soft. I melted down lead pipe, cleaned, and put into ingots for my furnace pouring. The hardness as I understand can be a problem. Pouring some cast bullets for my marlin 444 might be next.

From reading on other forums it looks like the soft lead is best for black powder with slow air cooling. So I should be ok with the lead pipe lead. I'm leaning towards the improved mini balls due to the REALS's being a little tight. I also found out that the conicals usually shoot good/great in 1-32 or 1-48 twist rates as long as you dont go over 1800 fps. I shoot loose 90 grains anyway with my sabots. Any lead casters here?

Yea,..I cast REAL's for my 45 cal...Got a mold from Dixie Gun
works in Union City, Mail order...It does alright, I reckon'..
It's the only one I ever owned...Got plenty of lead, but it's
alittle too hard, I think...Still makes them deer "lay-down &
wait" though...pass through without any noticeable expansion..
Like you said, they can be alittle tight, but very accurate...
Mine'sa Lee Mold..single cavity..250 grain & 80gr/777....It
seems a good combination...Don't know if ya can get lead that's
too soft, too hard is the norm...I like the REAL's.......BH51...

From what I gather wheel weights are good for faster boolits, not black powder velocities. Is that what you use BH51? The ww would be good for my 444 with a water quenching after molding as I understand. $18 bucks for a mold is worth checking out the accuracy and expansion with my 50 cals. At over a dollar a piece for sabots its time to think like I do with rolling my own rifle and pistol cartridges.
Ranch Dog molds are the cats meow for the 444, and lots of guys only shoot cast in the 444 from what I hear. Another hobby to keep me busy I guess. With the price of copper and wanting to have lots and lots of ammo on hand it seams like a good investment. Pouring no-roll lead sinkers has all ready saved me some on my fishing expenses.

Naw....I picked up this huge industrial-like round bar from a
scrap yard that appears to have been associated with perhaps
the electro-plate industry...It appears to have about the same
flexibility as wheel-weights..melts down about the same....BH51
