I know that there are many coon hunters around with dogs. I need some folks that could show me the ropes so to speak.
I am looking for a coon dog. I can get my own dog but I need some advice as to what breed would fit me and my family. The wife is picky about the house so it would primarily be a outside dog ( with his own dwelling..not just a 6x6 fence in the back yard) and would be inside half of the time. Other than that I have many places to work my dog. I have looked at the redbone coon hound and it's a good looking dog, but it slobbers and the wife wouldn't like that.

Would any coon hunters around be interested in hunting a farm in Macon County so I could get some experience in the process. (when the season opens) or....
is it legal to tree coons to train given you didn't have a gun.

thank you for your advice in advance
Brandon

Dog breeds for coon hunting are about like Fords, Chevys, and so on. Myself personally, I am a Bluetick man all the way. One thing about any hunting dog is that it really needs to be kept up and not let run loose, thats a recipe for a dog that will hunt way to wide and not check in often enough. I wont drive that far to tree a coon but yes you can tree coons during the off season just dont take a gun and shoot em out. If your dog must be a house dog, even though I dont recommend that, you may want to look into getting a Mountain Cur since they are a smaller breed.

Be wary of dog traders. If you get started with a junky dog you will be wanting to give it up before you ever get started.

Thanks for the info. Any more recommendations for what to look for within the breeders. I would suspect pure breed dogs from dogs that actively hunt.

Steven Stone:
Why would you not recommend it being a house dog. Would that ruin him as to make him more of a lazy pet?

I wouldnt go out on a limb and say it would ruin him because it cant be the case everytime but alot more often than not, house dogs tend to stick right at their owners heels. You dont want one that hunts to wide but you also dont want one that stays right with you.

And yeah just like TN RDG RNR said be wary of dog traders. If they are trying to sell you a good treeing coon dog and they want any less than several thousand for it then its probably not that good of a dog. I dont trust other folks when it comes to dogs and dont want to spend thousands on a dog so I raise my hunting dogs from pups.

Have you ever been coon-hunting before? I'm not being a smart aleck, but it would probably benefit you to hook up with a local hunter or coon club and learn as much as you can before you get a dog and dive into it blind.......jmo

My two cents would be not so much the breed but age, although different breeds and lines carry different traits. If you are just getting started and don't have a huntin buddy with an old dog I would not recommend a pup or young dog unless it is doing it on it's own.If I was you I would look for an older broke dog.And always try before you buy.Go hunting with the dog if all possible and like pretty much anything else "Cheap ain't Good, and Good ain't Cheap."Good luck to you and I wouldn't mind coming for a hunt sometime.Just let me know when you wanna go.

i wouldnt buy a dog from a breeder, find a coon hunter that loves the sport & only raises a litter of pups once in a while to get a young dog for his self, the breeders can be puppy mills just like any other dog breeds,mike243
