Hey everyone,

Took the boys out this afternoon and let them shoot some 22 and a 9mm ar. The ar with the collapsable stock fits them perfect and I think they may be ready to try to deer hunt this year. I was looking around and I can put a 6.8 spc upper on the standard ar15 lower. That way as they grow I can just extend the stock out as needed. The longest shot on my place is probably 150 yards but they will be starting out at alot shorter range than that to start with. I have a few food plots setup that are probably 75yds across. I don't think they'll be able to handle a 7-08 so was looking for something with a little less recoil to it.

the .223 will kill em all day long! and with no recoil!
The ones Ive seen shot with a 223 are just as dead as the ones Ive seen shot with a 300 rum! LOL

I would go with something more mainstream than 6.8spc. Why not a .243 upper on your AR? DMPS makes a .243, .260 and .308 upper.

Yeah I've got an ar10 that I can get a long action upper for but thought if I could stay with the short action that I could keep the weight down a bit. The 308 I have is too much for my kids but a 243 would probably be ok.

If you reload the 6.8spc it would be a neat round to have around, if not it might fall from popularity and get hard to find. Just a thought.

6.8 only if you reload. 260 or 243 would be a good choice with 243 having better factory ammo choices.

I've got a 6.8 in a Rem bolt gun. The thing is quite accurate, and perceived recoil is identical to 223 to me with less muzzle blast. I'm shooting 115 grainers around 2650 fps. I'm contemplating chopping off a wood stock and refinishing it to drop the barreled action in for my kids to start with.

Thanks guys. I'm going to do some looking around over the next month or so. I read somewhere that 6.8spc factory ammo is very expensive so that may not be an ideal caliber. thanks.

My vote goes to the 5.56mm upper also. If you were to buy a .243 .260 or .308 upper you already know that you would need a different lower. The .223 stoked with 60gr partition factory loads will lay a deer door-stop-dead and quick!

Thanks guys. I don't think I want to trust the boys to shooting an animal with a 5.56. I know some people around here are doing it but it's just not something I'm comfortable with.

Firefox I know that dtech makes some long action uppers that I could put on the dpms panther that I have but it is pretty heavy and I'ld like to keep something that is lightweight if at all possible. (I know I know.....I just want it all \:D ...... ).

Tater.....I saw the ssarmory loads referred to on ar15 and a 6.8 website. It sounds like kotonics is the place to get a 6.8 upper from if I go that route. I may still look into getting a complete rifle though.......I'll just have to see how the prices compare.

thanks again!

From everything I've read kotonics makes a pretty good upper. I have a buddy that has been using the 120 pro hunters with success.

leeinmemphis,
I take no offense and I like your thinking towards a complete rifle. With the upcoming elections and current event you might as well get a complete rifle...you never know what the new Government will sign into law! I'm not talking Dem/Rep...I say about current events from VT all the way to last weeks NIU event. I for one feel that even if I go to the fun store today and buy a new stripped-lower that it's serial number will get snatched-up by the gun grabbers for not leaving the factory as a complete rifle. The future looks dim for those of us who love semi-auto military type rifles...

Yeah I'm thinking getting a couple of lowers this year may be a good move so I'll likely purchase a complete 6.8. I'm going to look at some of the choices at the local gun stores and see what's available locally. I'm not in a huge hurry but will probably try to get something by mid-summer so they can have a few sessions of shooting prior to fall.
