I never leave ANY of my rifles cocked in off season.
For bolt actions: Lifting the bolt is the action that cocks the rifle. To decock, make sure the CHAMBER IS EMPTY! Slowly raise the bolt, pull the trigger to the rear, and slowly lower the bolt. The spring is now in the relaxed position and the safety will not move into the safe position.
