I have owned one pistol in my lifetime. It was a Ruger P90 45acp. Loved to shoot the thing, but if anything was further than 20ft, it was safe. I have never been able to shoot a pistol. I sold it to a pistol "freak" and he swore that it was the most accurate pistol he'd ever shot. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Long guns, I'm deadly, but with pistols I look like barney fife. Recently the wife and I have been talking about purchasing a pistol. I'm not really looking at revolvers, but mainly interested in semi-autos. What is the absolute best pistol out there for less than 500.00? I am looking at a 40cal or maybe another 45. I really like the ruger's, but I'm not as faithful to one caliber when dealing pistols as I am to long guns. Is the 40 or 45 "too much" gun for my wife to shoot and feel comfortable with?

Everyone will have a different opinion, I have a Firestar .40 cal, it is very compact for a .40 cal and is surprisingly heavy for its size. Because of this it is very comfortable to shoot (very low recoil) and very easy to conceal.
In comparison to my dads Beretta 9mm mine is 1/3 the size and mine empty (no mag) weighs as much as his loaded.
My wife has shot it and had no problem with the recoil but after 1 shot each out of a friends 1911 .45 and Glock .40 cal she didnt want anything else to do with them.

If you are planning on her using or carrying one take her to a gun shop with an indoor range and let her try some out till she finds what feels best for her.

Glock or Springfield XD in 9mm will do the job time after time. They are flawlessly cycling pistols. You can get a Glock for $375 to $400 brand new in the box at Craigs Firearms in Seymour.

I have a Styer M40 the thing is awesome everything I didn't like with the Glock was taken care of(designed by the same guy). I can't shoot a pistol for beans but this one has sights it's just plain hard to mess up with.

It's on Chapman highway. They sell law enforcement pistols only and sell them at a significantly lower price. I was looking for a holster and noticed the prices are a lot cheaper.

That's my favorite pistol and the one I keep with me most times. I first bought one in 9mm. and then found one in .45ACP. The 45ACP shot just as well as the 9 so I sold the 9. It shoots where I point and not all pistols do that especially in a nice compact size. I don't mind the extra weight of the steel frame. Some pistols just fit some hands better and you need to try a few to make a decision.

I'm a sig man... the last P229 in .40cal I picked up very lightly used for $500. That thing will shoot!

Glocks are very popular, but for some reason I just don't like the awkward feel of the recoil. Seems too mechanical for me. The sigs just seem more fluid.

I 2nd Sigs, but they can be heavy and bulky to carry. Might look into the new Sig 225 it comes more polymer than most sigs. But having said that I carry a Glock 23 now and not the Sig just to bulky/heavy for CC.
