I just purchased a Johnny Stewart Preymaster off of the Cassifieds and have the same question. From what I have read so far, the cottontail distress call is hard to beat.

Howls, ki-yi's and fawn bleats (in that order). Behind that would be a woodpecker and lastly a rabbit. I prefer mouth calls.

ki-yi is the sound of a hurt or fighting yote correct? why do you think they respond better to howling and ki-yi? Here lately I've had better results for simply using cotton-tail in distress and the squeaker! I'm just trying to get better at this because it is a fun hunt.

All the coyotes that I have ever shot at, came in April to a grey fox distress tape. If theres foxes around, they will jump in your lap, but the yotes love that sound.

Yes, you are correct on the ki-yi. Yotes are EXTREMELY territorial so when they hear a strange dog in the neighborhood they usually check it out. Keep your howls at a high pitch, they aint gonna come in knowing they are bout to take a whoopin so try to sound like a young stupid dog. I mix distress sounds with my howls. If they think your stealing thier supper, so much the better! Oh, and as far as the ki-yi's, if a yote is killin a deer the deer might get in a lick or two also ;\) I don't claim to be a expert but mixing the ki-yi's with fawn bleats has always worked very well for me.
