Been reading up on these two calibers trying to decide which one to pick for my new varmint rifle. What would be some pros and cons for each caliber? Any opinions or reasons for the best caliber to pick would be much appreciated?

17 HMR is only going to get you out to around 150 yds until it starts dropping. The .204 will get you out to 400. These are considerably different cartridges. What are you shooting game-wise and how far?

If I was coyote hunting or p-dog hunting, the .204 gets the nod. If hunting sguirrels on the ground and longer distances distances, it would get the nod over .22rf.

For a predator gun, the 204 hands down, no competition.
For ground hogs and such, it depends on how far you will be shooting.

I mainly want something for target shooting anywhere from 200 to 300 yards so I can improve my long range shooting abilites, so I would be going through a lot of rounds. Therefore, the cost of the rounds is a big factor! As far as hunting, it would be for squirrels, rabbits, groundhogs and, crows. I already have a .243 for coyotes and such.

Yes I do know that the .204 for is a centerfire and the 17HMR is a rimfire. The remington ballistics chart that I have been refering to only has ballistics for the 17 HMR, so I really can't compare it to the .204, that is why I am asking the question here on the forum. The remington ballistics chart says the 17 HMR only drops 3.3 inches @ 300 yards...to me that is pretty darn flat. I don't know what rounds for the .204 cost but I have found out that a box of 50 ea. 17HMR's is @ $13.00 seems pretty reasonable.

i think you need to look again \:\) they make a .17 that is center fire that is a hot round,i have a 22mag & a .17hmr & like both,at most ranges the 22mag will have more energy but the .17 is flatter shooting,no center fires allowed for squirrels as far as i know,mike243

Wow! $18 for a box of 20...I can buy .243 rounds cheaper.
