First Dr. Dickel, then mr big, now statelineRUT and DA.

I think I`m ready to take the leap of faith in my buddies love of this round.

My dilemma, a short handling rifle with 22" barrel, to actually use as a stalking/calling rifle, or a heavier tubed, longer higher speed rig to see the splash factor.

We have several choices at work, LVSF in 204, one like mr bigs in 204, SPS Varmint in 204, XR100 in 204 (cool rifle) and a Stainless laminated in 204. The LVSF has a 22" tube, all others a 26". I have it between the LVSF for practicality, and the XR100 for the ultimate cool factor. Thes have solid bottom action and 40X trigger, vented thumbhole stock.

Forgot to say, I shot one in SPS Varmint a couple of days ago and it has really got me to thinking about getting one for target shooting fun and getting an ecaller for yote hunting, but I hate to spend money towards guns right now when I have loads of things to spend it on for my land.

Based on how well my SPS .308 Varmint shoots I'd buy one in .204 in a heartbeat. The .308 has VERY little recoil. A .204 should be nothing.

OK ,here's my plug. Have put about 100 rounds through my Savage FV and with handloads,I'm too the point where I will always have a 204 to play with ! I absolutely love shooting this round !

My present loads are consistently less than 1/2 inch MOA. Just my plug !

I just went Kampfield Custom in .223AI on Remington Varminter with Rock Creek Rem. Varmint contour with 1/8 twist. I thought about .204 but .223 brass was too easy to be had over .204.

If I went custom, I`d be thinking 20 Practical with Lapua 223 brass. I have me a pile of goodies at work, new cleaning rod, brass and 3 boxes of 35 gr Bergers. Many choices on the rifles, but Gunbroker has way better deals than I can get at Sportmans on the XR100. We have so many 204`s it is a hard pick. SPS 204, SPS Varmint, LVSF, XR100, SPS SS, VSSF II, VS, SS VL.

Mercy.............

I am sure I messed up on some of the models, but we got plenty.

The CZ 427 that my Dad has is scary accurate. It shoots 4 factory loads @ less than .5 inch and 2 @ les than a 1/4. Other than ammo prices there is no reason to reload for that gun.

I know my LVSF 22-250 has more recoil than the ones with heavy barrels. If I were to buy another it would be this http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=91201651 or that XR100 would work also, especially seeing as how they are $200 cheaper ;\) .

Good Lord, you guys are killing me! I think I may end up with more then one varmint rifle!! Dr. D, I really like that gun!!

What do you fellas think of the Savage series of varmint rifles? I've read quite a bit about them on different forums and everyone only seems to have good things to say about them.

I`ve been around them a lot lately and have learned to appreciate the rifles. Still have no lines to fall in love with, but the metalwork is nice, bolt smooth to operate, and an excellent reputation.
The newer ones with the large bolt handle would be my pick. I have sold one of their 1" tube right bolt left port rifles to a friend. It was chambered in .223 9 twist, we had another in 22/250 12 twist. Those both sold for $829.99. Lota gun for that kind of $.

I`m around a lot of shooters myself, those that shoot the Savages do well. Remington, Savage, Sako/Tikka are the nucleus of the top rated accuracy rifles in my mind.
If I didn`t shoot Remingtons, and customs off those, and was just going to commit to a factory rifle, it would be without a doubt Sako. These are beautifully machined, smooth as buttermilk, and pleasing to the eye.

I have yet to see a Savage varmint rifle that would not shoot. They ain't the prettiest girls to dance with, but they get their groove on. I had a Savage VLP in 204 and it shot great, my buddy still has his. What pissed me off is they claimed their Accutrigger was adjustable from 1 1/2 pounds to 6 pounds. Mine would not go less than 2-9, buddies would not go less than 2-4 and we even swapped springs around in ours and it did not make a diffence. I complained to Savage that if they said their product would do something, then it better dang do it if I was going to own it. I tried to get them to send me more springs to try and they said I would have to ship the gun back to them to swap it out. I said BS to that as I was not going to be out $25 to ship a gun back to them to put a spring in that would not go to 1 1/2 pounds either.

Anyway, that was about the time Thompson came out with the Prohunter barrels that were 28 inches long for the Encore and I bought one of them to try and got that trigger set at 1 pound and started shooting it more and sold the Savage.

Long story.....but to answer your question, you dang skippy a Savage will shoot. \:D

I'd reckon that would piss me off too. You said they aren't the prettiest, but I've been on their website and some of those gals aren't too bad on the eyeballs! Or atleast I didn't think they were. They have one SS and laminated with a thumbhole that caught my eye for sure.

I thought about calling you last night, but I couldn't remember what I had done with your digits.
