Well I finally bought me a Rem 700 SPS in 300 RUM and I can't get it to shoot much better than 2.5 moa. I have tried factory 150's and 40 reloads and nothing gives. I have a good Bushnell Elite scope on top that has all screws soft set loc-tited. The pattern is always like a shotgun spread, no specific area, but located all around the bullseye. I have checked action screws and I shoot off sandbags on a concrete table, my other guns were shooting .4-.5 moa the same days so its not the weather. I thought about barrel heating, but it was 14 degrees and I let the barrel go cool to the touch between shots. I'm about ready to send it back to Remington, a long range caliber does you no good if it's not really accurate, 1 moa is a bare minimum.
I checked about stock clearance but the SPS is not free floated at least the two I have are not.and my 300WSM shots .5-.6 moa all day. Any pointers would be very helpful, I have never encountered a problem like this with a Rem 700.

I can't offer any advice on how to make that gun more accurate, except echanging it for another one, (or getting a Savage ;\) ).
I'm just wondering why you need that gun. You've got at least one 300WSM that already shoots great. You could just use that gun and spend your money on other kinds of equipment. Does the 300RUM offer any advantage over the 300WSM?

It's not about need, it's about want. I have traded the 300wsm to my bother, I just wanted a longer range whitetail gun. My ultimate goal is to load a 130gr TSX's in it at a very high velocity for shooting clear cuts around the house. To be honest I just enjoy reloading and tinkering with guns. i actually considered a Savage, but they did'nt have one in 300RUM at the Sportsmans Warehouse.

3.77 is my distance from bolt face to chambered bullet, but I believe the magazine is set for 3.63 or something around there. my first two shots are the closest of the group then it sprays them into a 2.5moa group (4 shot) I got one 1.5moa group(3 shot), but the average is 2.5. All loads performed fairly close to the 2.5 moa mark. My Bushmaster shot .4-.5moa groups as wells as my 7mm Mauser .5-.6moa. It was 14-20 degrees when I was shooting, so barrel heating should'nt be an issue. I have never encountered a rifle that barrel heating changed POI an 1.5" at 50 yds.

I'm going to try some .010 off the lands even if I have to hand feed them one at a time, if thats the ticket I can modify the magazine if needed. I'm going to try all options and if the gun does not dial in to at least 1 moa I plan on sending it back to Remington. I may even try another scope on the gun to be %100 sure about my optics. I could sell it, but I don't want to pass a problem on to some else, thats just wrong. I'm going to contact Remington and get their opinion on the matter and try a few rounds at the range Monday. I could rasp out the barrel channel on the stock, but I don't want to void anything on my warranty until I talk to them.

I would say 500yds would be my max range, for now. I agree on the accuracy part %100. My brother has my old 300wsm now, I hoped the new 300RUM would shoot pretty close to the same, and it still might before I'm done. I have had this bug to try 130gr TSX's out of the RUM for 300-400yds deer hunting. As for further than that, I have to get this thing dialed in first. I will be pissed if this thing does not come around and I just traded off a tack driver.

First, take off the scope, then be sure to check the bases again... make sure to lap the rings for better contact. Replace with a different scope and try your loads again. I know you think your scope is tight, but the amount of recoil generated by the RUM will really move the scope/base/rings unless they're perfectly installed.

If that doesn't work, rumor on the street is that most 300 RUM's favor either the 165gr/ 200gr bullets OR the 180gr bullets, but for some reason not both. I'd load up some 168gr SMK's, that way there is no issue regarding the bullet itself (I've had accuracy troubles out of the Barnes). If you get it to shoot the 168's under MOA, then you should be able to go from there experimenting with other bullets both larger and smaller.

If that doesn't work, time to ship her back to the factory for a once-over.

I've got a buddy who bought a 300 RUM sendero with jewell trigger because the original owner couldn't get it to shoot for $600. He looked it over, it seemed fine. With his handloads, the gun consistently performs in the 1/2 MOA or better range. Sometimes you just don't realize it, but your shooting form really comes into play with the heavy recoiling rifles.

OK

I have a spare Nikon that I will swap, I have steel leupold bases and rings on it so they should be good. I also use a piece of 1" bar for a line-up tool.
Heres the bullets I have on hand.
165 NBT
168 Nosler J4
180 RN
130 TSX
168 TSX
150 Hot-cor
165 Gamekings

If that don't work I'm calling Remington, I just want to have all my bases covered before I blame the gun.

Lots of good info and tips, I'm going to work up my loads after work tomorrow and change the scope and go to the range Monday.
No coffee or caffeine, I don't want any excuses.

Thanks

Mine did just fine with loads to magazine length. Loads at 3.600 did just as well as loads that were near the rifling and would have required a 2 shot approach. I wound up using the 180 Accubond over 96.0 grs. of RL25 which of course you need to work up to. If you run anything lighter than 180 be sure you use a premium bonded, partition or the like bullet or you're in for disappointment.

I don't know if you've done it but you mentioned 40 reloads fired in the gun. With a new factory barrel like that it's probably going to foul up like crazy for the first bit. That 300RUM can lay down the copper so clean it religiously.

The first thing I did with mine was to change the trigger and bed the action before I even shot it. It's first groups with factory Remington 180 corelokts were under 2 inches at 200 yards. Handloads took that down to 1 to 1 1/4 inches at 200. Can you say happy? And that's from a sporter barrel. Where are you shooting? I'm up in Athens and shoot at the Chilhowee Rod & Gun Club. I assume you're probably using the Cleveland Club's range. I've shot archery shoots there before.

I shoot at the Chattanooga Rifle Club, I plan on a good cleaning before the range tomorrow. I'm going to try the 168's and 180 RN's. Did you get a SPS or a different model, I thought about rasping the stock out so it would clear the barrel, but I'm kinda of wary of modifying the gun until I make sure I don't have bigger issues that would require it to be sent back to the factory. If I can't get 1 moa out of it I don't want it. I plan on using TSX's for hunting and Nosler NBT's for plinking, but the gun may decide what it wants to shoot on it's own!

if it won`t shoot any of the loads you have listed in less than 2.5 something is wrong,,I wouldn`t waste anymore powder..something major to be that bad,,crown nicked up or a lug out of square bda or something,,

I think mine would shoot better than that with the bullets loaded backwards.

A picture is worth a 1000 words.

Same results today with twice checked scope rings and twice changed scope, and different loads, so I called Remington.

I have to say the attitude of the lady that I talked to was very positive. She said that a Remington 700 should shoot alot better than 3 moa and said to send it back, she only asked if I had tryed different types of ammo. I can say it was a positive experience, now I hope they get the probelms straightened out.
Off to put the gun on the Brown truck!

I shot three groups this morning and same thing, everything was tight and looked to be in good condition. Thats kinda scary about those mounts breaking, mine looked good. It's going on the Brown truck heading back to Remington.

Are you sure you let the barrel cool enough? I know it was cold but 300RUM barrels get hot very quickly. I don't even attempt to shoot mine for groups in hot weather.

I waited five minutes between shots with the temp below freezing, the barrel was not ice cold, it was warm, but not hot at all. Once the barrel was warm, not hot, it should shoot consistent groups even if they differ a little from the cold bore shot. I can understand a cold bore shot being a little different but not 1.5"'s off at 50yds. I have owned full-auto M16's that did'nt drift that much after a full auto burst of 30rds. Anyways the gun is on it's way to Remington, I'm curious to see what kind of groups they get and what procedure they use in reference to barrel cooling when they pattern suspected accuracy problems. This will most likely be a good learning experience.
