I posted this on the general forum and responses were low, so now Iím coming here to get to the people who are serious about guns.

I lucked up and was able to get a safe for free. It is a fire safe from the 1920ís Ė 1940ís and is about the size of a large refrigerator. I want to make it into a gun safe by installing the appropriate racks inside. Unfortunately, the safe is so heavy we canít get it inside the house. It will have to set in the attached garage. For moisture management, I plan to drill a small hole through the bottom corner in order to run a power strip for a golden rod or something similar. Of course, the hole will be sealed with silicon.
My garage may get down into the 30ís in the winter, but I donít think it has ever gotten cold enough to freeze. Because the end wall faces the west, it catches the setting sun and the garage gets above 90 deg, (maybe above 100 deg.) in the summer. Even though the inside of the safe will have low humidity, will the guns and scopes be OK in there? How about ammo?

My safe has been in the garage for 6 years now with no problems. I have a goldenrod as well as 2 gel-pacs that can be reactiviated in the oven. On top of that I put each gun in an silicone impregnated gun case for some extra protection. This has worked well for me. Hope this helps.

Mine is in the house but a friend of mine has one of the giant ones in his garage and never had any problems. He too has the golden rod or something similar to keep the moisture at bay.

Since I can borrow data loggers that measure temperature and humidity from work, I can track what itís like in there. This will allow me to know if I need to plug another Goldenrod into the power strip.

I can understand how silicon can help prevent rust if the silicon is applied directly onto the metal. Since Iíve never used one, please help me to understand how a silicon sleeve helps. I am assuming that the sleeve doesnít transfer the silicon to all metal surfaces of the gun just by sliding the gun into the sleeve.
