I just reposted over here from my post in General Forum. Thanks for advice.

I checked with a LICENSED DEALER while in Clarksville (being a military town, I thought supply would be good) today about some bulk 7.62 ammo for my 30-06. Didn't care if it was FMJ just wanted cheap for target practice. He thought I was crazy. This was our conversation. Him.."7.62 is for .308 NOT 30-06. It comes in 7.62x39, x49, x64 etc. It's all for .308!" Me.."But I've got a box left over still at home and had bought a few hundred rounds bulk of cheap FMJ that I've already shot." Him.."Not in a 30-06. ALL 7.62 is equivalent to .308" Would not believe me, thought I was crazy after all he was a DEALER. I gave up. Right now I am looking at the last partial box of Hansen (Yugoslavia) ammo. It says 30-06 Springfield, (7.62x64 M2) 150 Grain. It's FMJ for target only. I have a brass I dug out of the brass bucket from the bulk FMJ surplus I bought that has on the end GEVELOT 7.62 MOD.49. I'm assuming that is 7.62x49. I'm no expert...please help with "good" advice so I don't "put my eye out". \:\) I need to get some cheap target ammo and can order 7.62 for $5 a box or $200 a thousand but need to know EXACTLY what I'm looking for. Thanks.

7.62 is usually thought of as .308!

In the U.S. 30-06 is seldom, if ever, described as anything other than 30-06. Calling it by any other name, while possibly technically correct, invites confusion and misunderstanding.

Without a more detailed product description, it's impossible to know whether that would be what you're looking for or not. My guess would be probably not.

Just re-checked it's the 7.62x54 (too short) not the 7.62x63 or 7.62x64 which I believe is what I have to have. Thanks for advice also posted over in General Forum.

7.62 NATO is the designation for the military version of the .308
The case dimentions while close are close, but not the same.

http://www.thegunzone.com/30cal.html
http://www.fulton-armory.com/308.htm

These 2 article explain quite a bit. One of the main problems with using military spec'd ammo is the pressures. Be sure what your weapon can/will handle.

I did find the 30-06 (7.62x63) FMJ for $149 for 500 rds. $178 with shipping. $7.12 a box. May get it, might just stick to Wally World for a few bucks more. Thanks again everybody.

From how I understand it. 7.62 is the NATO designation for .308 Winchester. SInce NATO had barely formed when the 30/06 went the way of the dodo bird, most folks see the 7.62 as a NATO,russian...etc

Several 7.62s out there.
7.62x39
7.62x51---.308
7.62x54R
7.62x63---30/06

And probably several more. PH

where did you go???? to grandpas and or allens and talked to them experts ? or somewhere else in clarksville like one of those new "tactical" know it all outfits on 41A . i hate it when the self declared know it all types always think the customer is wrong and that they are the only ones who know anything just cause they work behind the counter. try "cheaper than dirt" website. they have alot of what you are looking for in greek fmj ot6 ammo all the time. or make the ride out to C&K in woodlawn paul and randy wont treat you that way at all.they will try their best to help you out, then their is the shell shop in hopkinsville they can order what ya need also. alot of these gunshops in clarksville dont know squat!!! about firearms or related type stuff and are just dumb owners that prey on the remf type job soldiers from fort campbell . Sorry for the hijack but does Grandpa's still exist in Clarksville? I saw your post renegade50 and it made me think back. I bought my first rifle from Grandpa's back in the early 70s. I remember it was a Marlin 39a that I bought for $89.95 and still have and treasure.

Sounds like you got ahold of a worker who THOUGHT he knew a lot.

Remingtom Model 760 30-06 Sprng. The place was on 41A (not grandads) but the BIG surplus store with the eagle sign and a pawn shop across the parking lot. Thanks everbody for proving I'm not crazy. I knew because I already had some 7.62 that was same as 30-06. I understand the other.308 rounds but I did TRY to convince the dealer that SOME 7.62 would work in 30-06 that not all was for .308. I know he didn't misunderstand me because I specifically told him 30-06 and that some of the cheaper FOREIGN surplus/manufacturers called it 7.62x?. At the time I didn't know the casing number (63). He just thought I was nuts. I have found a bulk supplier of new Bosnian ammo that the manufacturer lists as 7.62x63 and restates it as 30-06 like I had thought. It's noncorrosive, 150 gr. soft point not FMJ (which would mean I can use on groundhogs or coyotes too!), solid brass, Boxer Primed. By the 500 rd. case it costs $7.60 a box. More than surplus FMJ but I think it may be worth it for the soft point (since TWRA won't let you use FMJ on varmints I don't think) and NEW without any % being bad. Thanks to everybody I am now wiser and can order EXACTLY what I need!

that is eagles of war surplus store .... did they even say they dont sell firearms or ammo at all, and just a bunch of overpriced used or new stuff. he probably just did that to you to stroke his ego. old dude has a new corvette parked in front about every 6 months. not a place to buy anything other than junk / fake imitation military gear.

They just said they didn't know anything about ammo and sent me over to the pawnshop/gun store across the lot. The old guy there is the one that thought I was nuts.

that is eagle pawn shop and they are bottom feeders and deal in junk. go to C&K outfitters in woodlawn on hwy 79 check them out . they are customer orientated in all ways, guns, archery, fishing. if they dont have something in stock they will make every effort to get it within reasonable means. stay away from allens gun shop on hwy 79. his used guns for new prices cause they are worth more in my shop attitude sucks!!!! shell shop in hopkinsville is also pretty good for service and going that extra mile. grandpa's is the last place to buy anything!!!! other than the interdigital hoof scent they carry once in awhile,if you are looking for quality long arms and handguns from any era and probably ammo too ,,,call milton gordon in benton kentucky (google his #) he is a private dealer that frequents all the gunshows in the area of tn and ky. if he ask how you found out about him tell him the soldier from fort campbell that bought the pre 64 winchester model 100 from him in 1995 and the H&R Garand from him at the bill goodman show in dec 2004 in nashville speaks highly of him and referred you to him.

7.62 stands for bullet diameter, the 54, 54 is the length. 308 and 30-06 shoot the same diameter bullet.

In a nutshell, YUP! 54 mm is the length of the unloaded case.
