Has anyone done a post season census yet? What are your methods for getting them on camera this time of year? I was thinking about using corn close to bedding areas.
I have 2 homebrew cams for appx 400 acres. Thanks for replies.

The way the photo-census method was orginally developed and tested, a camera is placed near the center of each 160-acre grid-square (quarter square mile) required to cover the area, and corn or other attractive food source placed in front of the camera to draw deer in front of the camera. The sites are pre-baited for several weeks prior to starting the census. With 2 weeks of placing the cameras you should be able to photograph 95+% of the deer using the area.

BSK,

Considering the dangers of feeding corn in Tennessee (most of which have only come to light in the past couple years), could you still recommend using corn as bait for a post-season deer census?

IMO, the potential risks of baiting with corn exceed the benefits of the census.

In winter there's a very low risk of aflatoxin poisoning. Now for late-summer pre-season censuses, I have stopped using corn as the bait, primarily over concerns for aflatoxin. I would use some other attractive food source or even salt-licks in summer. And for both censuses, pre- or post-season, and I would run the census for the briefest time possible to limit disease transmission issues.

Not if you start out with "deer corn" from Wal-Mart or Bass Pro,
which is probably what most TN baiters use.

A couple years ago I put out some corn within a week of deer season closing. Most of it was still on the ground in late March and I was scrambling to get it all removed before turkey season opened, and thankful that I didn't wipe out my turkey population with the aflatoxin (as I had done a few years earlier). I don't care where you purchase your corn, if you dump it out post-season (in Tennessee), you run a significant risk of it developing aflatoxin, and as we both agree, few people will ever see or know it's ill effects (as they are really hard to see).

I purchased "cleaned corn" as thats what they were calling it at the Co-op. I'll keep corn out until early spring and then mid-summer when it not likely to get much rain. Now if we are having a wet summer I won't put any out

True Wes. I only use corn that is certified "aflatoxin free."
