Thinking of doing a food plot this year. Will need to get a local guy to handle the tractor work. What is the going rate these days? I've got a 5 acre field, but probably wont do the whole thing.

Redwing, There are companies that will put in food plots for u( advertising lately in mid south hunting and fishing) Cost for some one local can widely vary. Most big farmers dont realy have time and would be costly at best. Your best bet would be a local retired farmer or a neiboring hobby farmer.

Thanks for the info. This field has not been planted in several years. I'll admit I don't know jack about farming, what am I looking at as far as steps??

1. Soil samples from different spots.
2. Turn it over.
3. Lime it.
4. Plant it (insert suggestion here).
5. Fertilize
6. Watch the deer
7. Kill one or more.

Seeing that you are asking for help, I will volunteer for Step #7. \:D \:D

Seriously, you will have a great time. I have enjoyed working on food plots for the deer almost as much as hunting.

I am by no means an expert, but I can tell you it is worth the few $$ it costs to do a soil sample. Then you will know, by science, how much lime and fertilizer your land will need.

Enjoy!
