No but it is hard to maintain. Once you get the soil perfect and the alfalfa growing great the bugs move in. I still want to give the roundup ready alfalfa a try. That would help.

I planted my first half acre of alfalfa this spring, and am planting another half acre next spring. There are a couple of things I will do differently this time around. The first go round, I planted Alfa-rack (alfalfa + chicory) and had weed and grass problems. I sprayed grass with Arsenal with some success, but could not spray for weeds without killing the chicory. This spring I will be planting pure stand of alfalfa for weed control purposes, even though the deer liked both.

I will also change the way I prepare the seedbed. Last time, I sprayed Round up, then disked and planted a couple of weeks later. This time I will spray and disk 1st, then wait a couple of weeks and spray and cultipack without disking again.

The other issue is it needs to be hayed rather than mowed. I had the neighboring farmer do it, but I would rather find a way to do it myself. Atv landscape rakes are expensive, but I may look into gettin one.

What makes you say this, and would a bagger type mower accomplish what the haying would accomplish? thanks

Clippings need to be removed after cutting alfalfa or it can both smother the remaining plants and/or cause fungus problems...hence the baling for hay instead of just mowing.
