This year I was lucky enough to kill a deer I had trail cam pic,s of from Feb. A nice 10 pt that I posted on the Trail Cam forum last year. A couple weeks ago I found the right shed from this same deer, however after measuring both the shed and this years harvest he had only grown about 1 in. he had put on an extra 2 in in beam lenghth but his g4 was shorter by 2 in. Is this typical of growth or was the growing season with the drought responsible? Any ideas, thanks Danny

Usually bucks continue to grow larger antlers until at least 6 1/2, but each deer is an individual.

How old was the buck?

I,m no expert on age, but from knowing the genetics in the area I would say 31/2. By genetics I mean we have gotten 3 10 pts in 4 yrs off 115 acres with several pics of them at 21/2 with 10 pt antlers. He could be an EHD survivor also as he had split and flaking hooves.

I don't think EHD had much to do with antler growth this year, as the EHD hit just as bucks were finishing their antler growth.

What antlers a buck has at 2 1/2 has little to do with genetics and nearly everything to do with food resources. Seeing 10-point 2 1/2 year-old bucks is a very good sign. The deer must have some high-quality food sources.
