What is the purpose? Is it going to be a carry gun, car gun, house gun, etc...?

Not a carry more like a car gun.

If you like the .40 and its not for carry you should look at the sig line of pistols. I had a .40 sig 229 it was sweet. A little heavy to conceal carry comfortably but an awsome gun. Look at the M&P from Smith and Wesson also a quality pistol.

If it's a car gun, I wouldn't spend a whole lot of cash on it just in case it gets stolen. A $250 Taurus 357 Mag or a used glock in 40 cal would do the trick for me.

Springfield XD or maybe a Glock. Anytime you purchase a gun for self defense purposes you want to spend all that you can afford and get a quality firearm that will cycle 100% of the time. These two are the only ones I can think of that will fire and function no matter what (within reason). I own an XD in .357 Sig, and would probably own a Glock if it weren't for that high grip angle. My conceald gun is a 2 inch barreled "Carry it Anywhere" series Taurus in .357 mag, them and the S&W's are great if you like a revolver. I have heard to stay away from any Taurus auto. My $.02.
