You wouldnt believe the knowledge i have learned just by asking questions on this website? So here is another one. I just bought me the .223 barrel for my Pro Hunter. Now it is time to buy a scope to go on it. How much of a difference is there really between the VXII and the VXIII scopes. Im thinkin 3.5x10x50 power. Is there gonna be a considerable difference between the two? Im thinking especially at longer range shot. Let say 300-500 yards?

There is a huge difference in the quality of the lens coatings on the new VXIII's. Do you need to spend the money for that difference? That's the question. All depends on how small of a target you're shooting at, the available ambient light (ie dawn/dusk? ), how frequently you plan on shooting out to 500 yards (will that be just once or twice a year or regularly?), etc. But there will be a noticable difference between the two scopes to most shooters.

if I was spending that kind of money I would get a 4.5-14 Ziess Conquest,,

I havent bought a leupold since they changed thier Vari-XIII to the VXIII and so on but the Conquest is head and shoulders above the Vari-X III

I was in Bass Pro the other day looking through scopes. I realize this is not a "real world" hunting comparison, but I looked through each scope to the same distant dark ceiling corner of the building. I looked at comparable scopes in the 4.5-14x40 (some were 44 mm) range and was amazed at the differences. The Ziess Conquest was significantly brighter and clearer than the VXIII, which was significantly better than the VXII. The Nikon Buckmaster (I think it was a Buckmaster) was about the same as the VXII. The Burris Fullfield was also in the same ballpark as the VXII. Again, this was to my aging 49 year old eyes, not a scientific comparison.

If you are looking to spend enough to get a VXIII, I would take the Ziess home instead in a heartbeat. I liked the reticle in the Ziess over all the others also.

Before you plunk down a good sized chunk of change, I would highly recommend that you do a similar comparison at Bass Pro or Cabela's or Gander Mountain, etc. What is most important is your personal view through a scope, not what me or anyone else tells you.

I just bought the 4.5-14x44 Zeiss Conquest a couple of weeks ago and have taken it hunting a few times. Broke it in on an 8 pointer last week. The clarity is great. My only complaint in using it for your use might be the fact that it's a AO scope with side focus and requires a little fiddling with to get optimal clarity. You might be better served with a fixed focus. I've got a 3.5-10x50 VariX-III and so far I think I like the Zeiss the best. I like the extra power range and clarity and the light gathering power seems about the same. I also like the 44s better than 50s, but that may just be me. Hunt for a sale and save the pennies.

I might be sounding like a broken record, but, I used to own Leupolds until I messed up and looked thru a Zeiss. The Leupold is a good second choice.
