I agree. Yesterday I saw a doe in some brush, but couldn't find her in the scope with it set at 6. Later I re-set it to 4, and used it to shoot a buck. The wider FOV at 4 helped for quick target acquisition.

In a totally different situation, antelop hunting in Montana, my brother in law nailed an antelop with one shot using a fixed 4 power scope. We measured the distance at 324 yards.

I have a 2-7X32 on my ML, and like it as much or more than the 3-9X40 on my .270. Both scopes spend 90% of the time at either 4 or 6. They're at their lowest setting when I'm walking to or from my stand, in case a quick snap shot is required.

finally decided that 4.5-14x was all I could really use on a .270

it should be here Friday!

I would be worried about the low end of the magnification more than the high side. A quick moving deer in close range in thick cover, and you will have a hard time picking him up. I had a Vari-XIII 4,5 14 -40 on my 22-250. One woods set calling bobcats let me know that I made a mistake in scope selection. To each his own, but 3.5 on the low end is as high as I am willing to go for a hunting scope.

You made a good decision on the power, 16x is a personal max I would put on a hunting rifle, that's what's on my heavy barreled .300 Win Mag. and it's plenty.
