My cousin just called me to rub it in. He just took his longest kill to date set up at the same spot I killed my 640 yard doe. He centerpunched a 3 1/2 yr old doe at 688 yards with his 338 EDGE pushing 300gr SMK's at 2960fps. She travelled around 40 yards after the shot, despite a baseball sized exit in the offside scapula. If I recall, that round has around 3100 ft-lbs of energy retained at that distance!

That brings him up to 6 deer for the year with the 338 EDGE, with 4 of them beyond 400 yards. His longest kill prior to this one was at 666 yards last year.

He also called me to rub in a 6" group at 900 yards he shot with the gun in a squirrely 10mph crosswind the other day. Impressive since he did that with a bipod only, no rear bag.

What is a .338 EDGE? Will it give a regular guy like me an advantage over long-range shooting with a .308?

firefox,

Whether the EDGE will give a 'regular guy' like you an advantage over the .308 in long range shooting is all relative.

Not trying to be smart-alecky, but the average Joe doesn't have much business shooting at game beyond 250 yards or so. It takes a lot of practice, careful and consistent handloading (in most cases), learning how to judge wind, and most importantly when NOT to shoot. Once an individual spends that much time at the range just preparing for the long range shooting, they aren't the 'regular guy' anymore.

Personally for me it's been an evolution. I started out as the 'regular guy' and hunted that way for years. I started branching out a little with my first 7mm mag Sendero, as it will consistently shoot 1/2 MOA groups. With that, I became quite proficient out to the 400-500 yard range. I stayed there as my personal limits for around 6 or 7 years, and only in the past 2 or 3 years have I begun to shoot out to 600-700 yards. Personally, I wouldn't dream of shooting past 700 at this time, not that I'm not capable of it, but rather I just don't have the confidence that I will make a clean single shot kill on game EVERYTIME I pull the trigger.

As far as the .308 vs one of the ultramag cases... There are competition shooters out there more than capable of shooting 5-6" groups at 1000 yards with the .308 with regularity. The ultramag cases just give you more KE on impact and the ability to keep ultra heavy for caliber bullets supersonic longer. Also due to the improved velocity, bullet drop isn't as exaggerated as it is with the .308.

Will the .308 kill at deer at 600-700 yards? Just ask a marine sniper \:\)

Cool I have problems finding a place where I can practice at 200 yards. Must be nice having wide open spaces to practice at 600 yards Plus.
Congradts to you and your cus !!!
