thinking about putting a 6-18x40 nikon on my .270

I want more than the 3-10x that is on it now...would 18x magnification be beneficial on a .270 or a waste? (not planning to use it for short range/thick cover obviously)

It mostly depends on where you hunt (woods vs open).

I've got a 3.5 x 10 on my .270, 270 wsm, and Savage 10 ml2.

I've shot to 475 with no handicap in magnification.

I wouldn't put anything more than a 3.5x10 on it , but that's JMO.

I'd also agree with DA, a good scope is better money spent.

If you are comfortable with 18x, than go for it. It's your gun, your scope, your eye, your hunt. Do what is right for you.

Have you ever tried to hold on a target with 18x in the field? The slightest movement will DRASTICALLY move your POI. I would just practice with your 10x or go to a 4.5-14x. I have a 4.5-14x and haven't cranked it up past 9. IMO, you would be better off practicing longer distances with your current scope.

The 18x doesn't make your gun move more. It just shows up more. You control the rifle, the rifle controls the bullet, and the scope just magnifies your vision.

You don't mention the size ojective on your 3X10.The scope you are mentioning changing to 6X18X 40. The last # has to do with field of view if your 3X10X ?? is a 32 and you go to a 40 or 50 objective it would improve your field of view. In other words ,make it easier to find and hold on your target.A larger objective also makes it easier to see in low light conditions.

I would stay in the 3X10 or 4X12 range and consider something with a larger objective if you want to improve what you have going from a 3X10X32 to a 3X10X40 or 4X12X50 should be more than enough for a 270 in Tn. Out West shooting parrie dogs or Prong horns you might want alittle more.

The larger objective doesn't increase your field of view. It depends on the scope. I know of 20mm objectives that have a larger field of view than 50mm.
