Whats the best way to plant an area of honeysuckle? Do you use cages and start it in this to keep the deer from killing it? Do you buy honeysuckle or transplant some? When should you plant it? I plan on clearing about 1/8 acre of woods and doing a spot. I would appreiate any feedback, thanks.

As far as I know, you can't buy honeysuckle seed.

I transplant by taking cuttings, keeping them in wet paper for a few days (until the segements begin to root) and then transplant them to the new area, covered by chicken-wire.

Although I've heard of it being done in wet conditions by simply disking an existing stand of honeysuckle, picking up all the chopped up pieces, and then disking those pieces into the desired area.

BSK, can I transplant now or do I need to wait till spring or fall? Do you put several pieces right next to each other or just 1 piece.

Honey Suckle is very easy to grow from cuttings. Go find a exsisting honey suckle patch and take cuttings that are at least 6 to 12 inches long. LOnger is ok but not as easy to work with.Trim the leaves off the bottom of the plants. Where the leaves are trimmed is called Nodes. At each Node roots will grow.Put your cuttings in water in a warm sunny spot. Make sure at least 3 or 4 nodes are submerged in the water. After about 2 or 3 weeks you will see roots growing from the Nodes. You can then plant them in pots of potting or top soil. I would suggest at least a 3 or4 inch pot. Whatever you have and have room for will work. The bigger the pot the more room for roots and the faster your vines will grow. You can keep the vines in water for a long time, a month or 2. If you do this you need to change the water about once a week. If you don't the water gets funky and the roots will rot.
Another way to get new plantsthis spring go to a exsisting patch of vines take the end of a vine and bury it leaving 2 or 3 inches of tip sticking out. Leave the vine attached to the Mother plant. .After a few weeks roots will grow in the ground and you can cut it loose from the Mother plant.

I would transplant in spring, after green-up.

A great way to introduce honeysuckle on a large scale with minimal effort is to simply stretch some electric fence wire about 4 feet high in open areas. Small birds (that eat honeysuckle seeds) like to perch on this wire, and they'll drop the seed where you want it --- and be continually reseeding without your having to do anything further.

you can also buy a product called Root Tone that is used to make a cutting root. All you do is take the sprig as mentioned above and dip it in to the white powder and it automatically stimulates the plant to produce roots, hence its name. It is sold at lowes and other places with the chemicals for yard/gardening. A little bottle goes along way.
