Something I've noticed is that I have a lot of does on my property where i hunt. It seems that I have no shortage of them. But when I comes to bucks they never seem to be around. I was just wondering if the bucks are "shy" of the does off of the rut... would thinning out the does herd increase my chances of seeing more bucks?

Yes it would. BSK can explain it better than I can.

Also, just because you aren't seeing the bucks doesn't mean you don't have them. As far as sightings go, my buck to doe ratio is
2 does per buck. In reality, I beleive it is a little better, maybe 1.5:1 to 1.75:1

This is a little oversimplified explanation (hopefully BSK will chime in and give you the more complete one), but essentially if there is a doe behind every tree the bucks do not have to move much in order to breed them, so you do not have the daytime sightings of cruising or chasing bucks.

Great point, HH. In my area during this season, my observed ratio is probably about 5:1 (does:bucks), but my trail camera picture ratio run closer to 2 or 3 : 1.

Yes, for two reason: 1) Does are dominant over bucks when it comes to utilizing the best habitat. Nature has designed the young producers and rearers to be dominant hence get the best food and cover resources for survival of the species reasons. Doe groups often dominate the best habitat, forcing bucks outwards and away towards the worst habit. 2) During the rut, competition between bucks for breeding rights drives daylight buck movement. When numerous does exist per buck, little competition exists between bucks. Without competition, bucks don't have to follow estrus does during daylight. They can move only at night and still get plenty of breeding done. However, if fewer does exist, competition rises and bucks are forced to follow does during daylight if they want to participate in breeding that doe (intimidate other bucks away from the doe).

Yeah, I bet this year i've seen at least 13 / 15 : 1 doe to buck ratio. i need to do some thinning.

Interlunium -

Are you differentiating between does and fawns. That group of 8 "does" can easily be comprised of 4 does and 4 fawns. That simple step will bring your ratio down quite a bit.

My OBSERVED ratio this year has been 4 to 1 do/buck ratio. My ACTUAL ratio from 4000 some odd trail cam pics is 1.5(rounded off) does to 1 buck. Im very happy with that number.

Good example steven of how what is observed doesn't always match what is really going on.

Yeah it is does, actually never seen but one spotted deer so far all season, I understand that not all fawns have spots, But i'd still have to say, no, not really any fawns. Some of the does I've seen would have to be at least five years old...

Fawns may have spots in bow season , but they lose them as the season progresses .
Sounds like you do need to hammer the does .
