Had my bird out this afternoon when the winds calmed down a bit. Started out good and was following me about 40feet up in the trees. We were out for about 15 minutes and he started chasing 2 squirrels. One ended up going into a hol but the other went up high in he tree. He chased him for 15 minutes looking at me and going up when I called for him to and spiraled up and down the tree about 20 times. The squirrel then started jumping trees and he was right on his tail. Caught him in the tops of one tree and helicoptered down to the ground. I helped on the dispatch and the squirrel weighed 600 grams, a nice big female. He had a hold on the head this time and wasnt going to get bit again. I have pics I can post as well. Landon
PS can someone email me at landon531@yahoo.com so I can email them the pics? I dont know how to post that well.

Raised a red-tail hawk from a fledgeling to feather out good.. something got it (possum or coon) before I could try my hand at training falconry...the opportunity never came up again... Very interesting...Hope you come up with pics on that...BH51..

After a catch, and eat, of a squirrel like that, how long will it be before he is ready (willing) to fly and hunt again?

Landon, awesome stuff man! That is so cool. I hadn't heard about your bird getting squirrel bit. My sympathies. Been there, done that!

On my part or the bird? For me it never ends there is always something new to learn or a new technique and always learning each bird. For the birds it just depends on how hard headed they want to be. I had this one trained and hunting in 2 weeks my last one took a month and half.
Sidenote anyone that was going to come tag along with me may have to wait or I can see about going out with a friend of mine and his bird. Mine is having surgery thurs.

It is legal with state and federal permits and a state inspection and background checks. Trapped him by permit.

Read books, study, take a state exam, If you pass the state will come to inspect your equipment and housing for the bird. Then you apply for state and federal on a form you recieve from the inspector. This is my second year now and it took me 6 years before I had the money, time and enough knowledge to pass the exam. It is definately not for everyone and the best way to get into it is do research and find people to go out with.
