Just returned from Texas. I heard about a product called Deerweed and Winterweed. These are supposed to be drought resistant, tough forages. (www.deerweed.biz) Has anyone used or heard of these products? Check it out. What do you think?

From what I have read the Deerweed is a variation of Kenaf (Hibiscus cannabinus) ASK BSK! HE should be able to tell you all about it!

i thought about trying this the price seems steep at first 10.00 a pound but it takes only two pounds to plant an acre. from everything ive read deer use is limited so it probably works great if you have starving deer, if not maybe not so much. it apparently can grow 10 ft tall so if nothing else it could be good for cover, i would like to see what it looks like in the winter. according to the sight it has 25% protein and the winter weed has 15% protein, winterweed looks like a brassica.
the most drought tolerant blend i have come across is whitetail extreme. 25% protein and tolerates anything above 15 inches of annual rain as well as 5.4 ph. also a long lived perrennial.

I have a client that uses kenaf to produce a visual barrier to hide his food plots from nearby public roads (to cut down on road-hunting/spotlighting/poaching).

Hmm I wonder if you could get seed for the most popular deer "weeds" and make a natural plot in an old field.

This product contains
20% ragweed
20% clover
20% nasty smelling weed I saw deer eating
20% strange weed with white flowers that looks kinda like milkweed but isnt.
20% clover
20% vetch
20% other crap you cant kill out of your fancy expensive food plot but deer love.
40% thick stuff that grows 3-4' tall as cover.
:-)

fishboy1,

Or you can just disk in spring and let Nature take her course. I let several of my plots grow into "weed plots" each summer. The weeds are far more drough resistant than any agricultural plant I could use.

Disking in spring will help promote broadleaf weeds over grasses, but grass-specific herbicides can be used as well.
