If you decided to start a little fruit tree patch for yourself and let the excess fall for deer and wild life, what is the minimum number of trees you will need to have good pollination etc?

Apples?
Pears?
Figs?
other?

It depends on the varity you choose some are self pollenating.Talk with your county ag agent. He can give you some good advice on what grows best in your area. Many types of fruit trees do not do well in Tn. because of diease's.Here is a link to several publacations put out by U.T. that will help you decide and educate your self.Alittle research will pay off.

Fishboy you have 2 great scoures for the info you need. The county ag agent is at 2nd ave north in the tax acessors office. The state wide office for U.T. is in Ellington agucultural center off Nolensville rd and Edmenson pike close to the TWRA office.Great folks in both offices. I worked with them for many years as a menber of Davidson Co. Master Gardeners.

I don't know the answer to your question, but I'll share my experience on the matter. My father passed away 6 years ago. He was quite a gardener. Unbeknowst to us, a few years before he died he planted 20-something fruit trees with protective cages in a section of the yard about 100 yards from the house. A couple of years after he died these trees started to produce fruit. As a rememberence to him my mom now has them sprayed and pruned, and they bring the deer in mass from late summer through the fall.

All of the sources previously listed here are excellent but also Warren County (McMinnville,TN) is the nusery growing capital of the WORLD. Any of the nurseries located there are aextremely knowledgeable of what species grow best in TN and the numbers needed for pollination. Most have websites that can be found from Google at nuseries in TN and some will also send catalogs. Some of them will also sell in bulk during the winter with bare rooted fruit trees. Good luck.
