Remington 700 Muzzle loader 50 Caliber question

I have a 700 that uses the 1070 caps, it fires about 50% of the time (the cap)anyone else had any problems with it? I had Gander Mountain put a # 11 nipple on it and it wont fire at all, all caps are new! I took the bolt apart and oiled it all looked fine in there. Any sugesstions would help.

I shoot a 700 and haven't had any trouble with it not firing. I am using the Remington caps - sorry!

Get a 209 conversion kit. i had trouble with my Remington so I sold to a buddy that knew my woes with it. He put in the 209 conversion and bingo, no problems. The problem that I had was the cap was being driven further onto the nipple without firing it. Heard a lot of similar complaints. Remington before they discontinued that model switched to the 209 kit. My rifle was accurate and carried great, but couldn't trust it firing. almost cost me a 7 point buck in KY.

I too have a 700ML that i have had ever since they made them and it has served me very faithfully. In about my third year of huntin with it, it wouldn't fire 50% of the time, and i thought i had a nipple problem. Switched to a musket nipple and never had another problem, and have since switched to a 209 system and i'm still problem free. Does the hammer spring look good/travel right inside the bolt? Is the hammer dropping like you feel it should when you pull the trigger? These are the only things i know of that will stop a 700 from firing, and from what i understand, the nipple is the #1 cause as these rifles are very sensitive to this. Hope this helps!

Had that problem with mine when I went to Musket Cap and 209's,never with # 11,with the factory bolt assembly ie fireing pin and spring.Change to the factory 209 coversion kit and fixed that.As to the above posts.
Assueming the caps/primers aren't going off- You could have a weak firing pin spring or gander could have put the wrong length nipple in it for you.

Just saw this...
I'm assuming you've never assembled the bolt? If not, there's your problem. The firing pin and spring inside the bolt will rust on the Rem 700's causing weak travel of the firing pin. Disassemble the bolt, clean the sucker out and oil it well, and presto, you're fixed.

I agree with Mega, I got a used 700 and had problems that were caused by poor maintenance by the previous owner in that he had never disassembled the bolt and cleaned it. I did some cleaning and lubrication, changed to the 209 and it's given me no trouble at all and it's really accurate out to 165 yds. so far.

Thanks for all the help guys, Gander did put the wrong nipple on it!!!! I took it to the local gunsmith and he put the right nipple on it and its fine - perfect! I also bought a new main spring for the bolt and replaced it so its jam up! Anyone interested in it I would like to trade for a 30-30, 32 spcl, etc lever action!
