I'am in the market for a new scope. I have decided on a new Nikon, but can't decide which to order. I now shoot a Rem. 700 in .30-.06 topped with a Simmons Pro 50 2.5-10 x50 mm. It has been a decent scope but I wantthe Nikon for the clarity and hope to pick up some added shooting light.
My decision lies between

3-9x40
3-9x50
4.5-14x40

Persoanlly I dont like a 50 mm scope because I like the scope as close to the barrel as possible, and I dont like to lift my face off of the comb of the rifle to see out of a scope. A quality 40mm will give you a whole lot more clarity than a Simmons 50mm. For a 30-06 I would go 3-9x40 and be done with it. I have had great luck out of my 3-9x40 Nikon Monarch, which can be found for 200$ almost everywhere because of the new models coming out.

I've got a Nikon 4.5x14x40 I'd make you a good deal on after season is over.

go with a Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40mm and in my opinion will outperform the Nikon 50mm. You can pick up a Zeiss usually for $399.00 but I have found them cheaper if you look around long enough.

Call Doug at Cameralandny.com and he will give you a good deal with a Zeiss. Bought my last Conquest from him for 379 and it retailed for 529.

I've bought 50s in the past in both Nikon and Leupold and still have them on their respective rifles. I won't buy another though. I have come to decide that I like the 40s better for my hunting. The scope is lighter and not so far from the bore giving a better cheek weld for shooting. Get a really good quality 40 for the same price you intended to pay for the 50 and you'll have all the light you can use. I've got good 40s that are better in low light than my 3.5-10x50 Nikon Monarch and the equal of my 3.5-10x50 Leupold VXIII. I think the rifles just look better with 40s also, but you need to get whatever YOU will be happiest with. Good luck.

As some others have mentioned, I like my scope to be as close to the barrel as possible and use low rings. It is just hard to beat a 3X9X40. I have always felt that any additional light from a 50 is more than offset by the weight and less than perfect head position required. Besides, a high quality 40 will provide as much or more low light transmission than a lesser quality 50, and cost about the same.
