Check out this video....
http://video.aol.com/video-detail/ho...ine/1719349672

Notice what affect the rifleing on the bullet has going thru the ballistic gel. I just thought it was kinda cool...

That's not the rifling, that is the barnes bullet petals spinning thru the gelatin.

What causes the bullet petals to spin like that?

And people say there's nothing to the 'hydrostatic shock' theory of bang-flops.

I am a little confused. Rifling makes the bullet spin.
Example - 1 turn in 9, means it makes one rotation in 9 inches.
By the rotation in that video, to me it looks like 1 turn in about three inches, or less. I count about 9 rotations in the video. If it was a 30/06 with a one in 10 twist, then the block would have to be about 90 inches long.

I don't think so. Please explain.

Good obsevation,...Your trying to give me a head ache aren't you?
Due to the laws of physics, the rate of spin can not increase once leaving the barrel. How ever the rate of resistance once entering the gel is greater from the front and continues to increase as the bullet expands slowing the bullet down at a faster rate then the side force is slowing the spinning of the bullet down.
Now, maybe somebody can answer your question that really knows what they are talking about!! \:D \:D

Edited to say"
If there are six petals in the bullet then it could be that maybe there isn,t as much of a differance as it looks like.....Then 9 grooves(for lack of better word) in the length of the gel would be a turn and a half of the bullet thru the lenght of the gel......making the gel about 15 inches with a 1 in 10 twist...

Think of it like a drill bit going in. It is not like 6 blades
cutting at one time. One petal follows the other. The same as
a screw being screwed in to wood.

The velocity of the bullet does not have much change of the length the bullet travels in one turn.

A 36 Remington with a 1 in 16 is still one in 16 even though it is much slower then a 30/06 at 1 in 10.

I cannot see a bullet cuting but one groove at a time.

I may be all wrong. Just my thoughts.

Actually a drill bit has two edges. Each one does not follow the other. Each one makes its own individual cut and leaves its own track independant of the other. A bullet, if designed to, will do the same thing. If there was no rifleing and the bullet mushroomed into 6 or 8 sectioned peices (or petals as refered to earlier) still held in tact by the base, then each section would leave its own track in a straight line thru the gel. Going forward in a spinning motion each pedal will leave its own track that will spriral into and out of view at the rate of twist that is determined by the barrel. If the bullet in the video had 9 such (peddals) and you can count 9 ridges in the gel from one end to the other, that would indicate that the bullet made one revolution going through the gel. Then the rate of twist could be figured by the lenght of the gel block...Theoretically....
