I have a question for you guys. Me and some friends just acquired a small plot of land in Henry county that has plenty of dear and turkey on it. We are wanting to plant some small 1/4-1/2 acre plots on it. What would you suggest to hold the deer and turkey there?

The total land is only 19 acres, and will be used as a "Honey hole" for us.

Help please....!

If you want it to hold them there year round, go with a clover/chicory mix.

Turkey's love chufa, but the deer worship clover and chicory mix on my plots!

You could do pretty much anything I would imagine. If you were to put all three in a plot together, I would consider making the plot a little bigger than first planned. I don't know how much planting area you have on your property, but i would make the plot about an acre or more to allow for the browsing by both turkeys and deer.

chufa works better as a row crop then as a broadcast seed

chufa requires a very sandy soil... imo... your better off with clover and chicory

I would say it's the cover not the food that holds them.

Diversity of habitat is the key to holding deer. Ninteen acres would be hard to hold deer on. Go with the clover and chickory and you will at least have them visit.

i would add small burnet to the mix, i got some as part of WI extreme mix and have been well pleased apparently it needs only 15 inches of rainfall and tolerates a 5.4 ph this plant steps in and fills a major hole for deer in drought and will keep them around when clover annd even chicory wont produce.
