Your rhetoric sounds a lot like PETA rants. This Saturday - put down your gun, walk to where you want to hunt, and kill one with a spear, while wearing nothing but clothes you made from previous skins.

Then you can talk about ethics / morals a little more clearly - and with more of an audience.

Naa, on second thought,I won't even say it....... ;\)

Somehow I think what got lost in all this is that in his own way EWC was just trying to state how well the Savage muzzleloader can perform on occasions. Just like I was misunderstood back when I mentioned I had shot a 1/2 inch group with mine at 200 yds. Maybe both post came over as bragging but I sure did not intend for mine to be taken that way and I don't think EWC did either . That is part of the problem with posting on forums with words. They can be twisted into many opinions ,right or wrong. It sounds like he made a great shot and I would say that any of us who have hunted a lot in our lives have at some time or another made a shot that was out of the norm for us and if you didn't have a little bit of pride in doing it then you are not human !

You are 100% correct. We are all human, and pride is a part of all of our makeup. ewc made a fine shot, and he obviously is a great rifle shot who works at it. Its just that its hard to report our own exploits without coming off as bragging. The only things that I brag about nowadays are my grandchildren, who are, of course, above average, all great athletes, scholars and handsome to boot! I have always been only a mediocre rifle shot, adequate but not particularly good, and I'm not getting any better as I get older. Shooting a shotgun is another matter, but getting too specific about that will leave me hanging out there won't it? LOL

While deer hunting I like to use every legal advantage possible . I have no problem putting mature bucks on the wall and all but one was inside of 35 yards, so I know how to get close to the big boys. That being said I also like being able to maximize my effective killing range with all my weapons. If a person knows what they can do with a specific weapon and can consistently make ethical killing shots at above average distances then more power to them.Even though all the deer that I have killed have been inside 100 yards with the exception of 3, I sure like knowing that I can easily kill with any of my rifles at 400 yards.

renegade, I think that the paintball deal is a great idea, since I don't particularly like to eat whitetails anyway. Can you imagine the guy who kills it scratchin' his head wondering about the paint? The only thing better would be if it had a tag in his ear! LOL

Great shot. It's good that you actually practiced at that range before attempting the shot at an animal.

Ya'll remember when I killed that deer with a rock? Yeah anyway - ancient people killed mastodons using a stick with a sharp rock on the end of it. Heck of a shot ewc. I couldnt make it but if someone can wack an elephant with that gear, I'll buy you the biggest steak you can eat.

It is only the best equipment, and practicing with it to become aquainted with the trajectory can this be done. I believe this is the case and commend ewc`s achievement.

Great shot........
