As Hubby got a deer the other day, and as I've been thinkin' about it anyways................Can anyone give some good information on tannin' hides?

I would love to get into doin' that. Gives me a "role" in the whole process. Plus, it just seems like a great thing to do!

I did a deer hide a few years ago and it turned out ok. I'm a major amateur at it so I just bought a kit from Van Dyke's taxidermy. I believe it was the Curatan kit. It came with everything you need and instructions. The hardest part was "breaking" the hide to make it soft after tanning was complete. Eventually I had to break out the power sander to get it done. Google Van Dyke's taxidermy and take a look around. They have all kinds of stuff.

i bought a kit from cabelas. it has enough stuff in it to do 2 hides. i did 1 so far and it came out ok. i did learn not to do one in winter unless u do it in a heated room or it will never dry.

Thanks for the info! I got a book on Brain tanning. Thought I might try that out too. Doesn't really seem hard, but I haven't started yet either! HA

i did three bobcat hide a month ago with the van dikes kit turned out great. the best way to breah the hide is a dryer with no heat setting. it dose take a week or two for the last step to dry if its cold out.

Sawdust tumblers sure are nice and take care of that little job. Wonder if there are any successful "homade" tumblers out there.
