Well that all depends, on what season it is. I have, over the years customized several packs for the different seasons. blackpowder, archery, gun seasons. I picked up a couple really nice 3 compartment hippacks at Wal-Mart a few yrs back,(@ 9x9x4)I put a knife, drag rope, flashlight, ziplocks, zipties, latex gloves, compass, and any season related item in that specific pack.
I have two for the gun season, a small one for those quick afternoon outting and a larger (oversized fanny pack w/ suspender type & belt fasteners) for the all day ventures.
Always drop a ziplock in each one w/ baby wipes (they last a whole season if I don't use them first)
I carry a old scratched CD in the day pack, they work great as a signaling mirror if ever needed.
fulldrawxx75 trailmix and a few

Like most I carry more than I need. I think the longer we hunt the more 'stuff' we need to take with us. Let me tell this one. Years ago me and two friends went on our first mule deer hunt in Colorado. The outfitter had sent a list of what we needed to bring. The first morning we were getting ready to leave and one of my friends comes out with this backpack filled to the brim. Outfitter looks and pack and says Joe we will be back tonight. It looks like you have packed for 2 or 3 days.

Like some of the other guys i taylor my packs to the season. I hve one for bow, muzzleloader and gun. I carry gloves, face mask when cold, of course the necessities such as knives, zip ties, electrical tape for you never know what. Extra pins for the deer climber in case i lose or drop one. I have found over the years that i usually carry a few things too much. It is amazing how even a 20 oz coke is a rediculous bit of extra weight. I keep the binos ie 8x42 steiner merlins around my neck and a nikon range finder also. I usually try to keep a snack such as crackers or moon pie or oatmeal cookie for later in the morning to keep me preoccupied in case the action is slow.

I like the extra climber pins idea. I had to learn that one the hard way in the dark a few years back. Another hard lesson - I had an incident many years ago where I slipped in between the top and bottom halves of my climber. I hadn't tied a string between them, and it was before full harnesses. The single strap started squeezing the breath out of me, and if I hadn't had a knife in my pocket to cut the strap and let me shimmy to safety, who knows? I always keep a knife and whistle in my pocket just in case I fall or my pack falls. What good are they if they're in a pack 30 feet up a tree and I'm not. One other thing - I keep a a turkey mouth call to practice soft calling. It doesn't seem to affect the deer at all. If you run into a flock, you can have a little fun with kee kees and such. If it's bow season, you may even get a shot. I got a hen last fall just goofing off in the bow stand. I didn't actually call it in - the flock wandered into range, and I luckily didn't get busted. I wanted to see what they'd been eating, so I took the photo of the crop contents. All the hoppers, walking sticks, acorns, and seeds are completely whole.

My lord I thought I was the only one who went into the woods prepared for the appocolypse. I have all the nescessities: knife, license, calls, scent, first aid kit, 550 cord, binos & range finder and a leatherman plus extra stuff like release and sight for my bow and a snack and water. It only weighs 15 pounds couple that with my 23 pound treestand and I am floating like a butterfly @ 40 pounds of gear!

Agree on tailoring for the season. Haven't seen anyone add screw in bowholder/s for hanging the bow, pack and quiver once on stand. I use a full harness and have substituted the flat nylon strap that goes between the harness and the one that goes around the tree with a 15ft. piece of black kevlar core mountain climbing rope (about 5000 lb test). It is long enough to go around most trees you can get a stand on, doubles for a drag rope and I've even used it to pull a buddy's car with. Otherwise for the bow season:
rangefinder knife license extra shooting tab / release thin rope for haul line gloves folding saw for clearing shooting lanes small bottle of insect repellent 1 extra tube of camo paint rain gear based on forecast- ALWAYS when hunting out west. TP in a baggie snack if hunting all day
This all fits in a medium sized fanny pack. I hat wearing a backpack during bow season. Always end up with a wet back on the way in.
Check everything on the bow at the end of the last practice session so I know everything's working before I head out. Emergency tool kit for adjustments / repairs stays in the truck.
Hope this helps.

Forgot- I always make the small cord I'm using for a haul line about 23 feet long. Tie it to one of the leg straps on your harness. If you're using a climbing stand, or strap on steps, when you get far enough up the tree that the haul line is just off the ground, stand height is right at 20 ft.

During rifle season I don't carry very much. Knife, matches, Flashlight, TP, ranger survival handbook.
During archery and Muzzlelaoder the dang thing is loaded with all kinds of junk plus the above listed items.

i think i buy a newer bigger pack every year. the areas my buddy and i hunt arent to far from where we stay so our stuff isnt as much as what ive seen on here so far. plus we keep an ammo can at the base of every tree stand we put up. in that we usually keep tp and cem lights. but in my pack i carry a book or magazine, poker game, feild knife, a notebook (i log every thing i see on every hunt always) pen, penicl flash light extra batteries, 5-50 cord ( you can get a 500 foot rool of this stuff at an army navy store and its tough we have drug deer out of the woods with it. and depending on the time of year face paint. plus cell phones and walkie talkies. and i might take a few extra rounds for the rifle. my wife makes fun of me when i pack becuase ill get everything loaded in there just right then tear it all out and do it all over agian because i forget something.

Knife, scent, license, grunt, "the can," another grunt, night pins, more scent, cover scent, couple extra shells, and some other stuff I never use correctly. I don't keep toilet paper because I try to refrain from eating much the evening before. I've never used to blood track one either. I used to tell my wife the best way to keep the kids from pooping in their diaper was to stop feeding them! Heck we'ld save money on food and diapers!! oh yes...rattling sack.

canteen , warm clothes, headlight, tp, bullets, snacks, binocs, handwarmers, toboggan, extra copenhagen, mittens, and a little pouch with space blanket, firestarter, and a few first aid items. I hunt alone and way back in the mountains and like the extra security in case something happens.

Knife, toilet paper , rain suit, dry ziploced bag of socks, drink , food, camera, binoculars, animal calls, small travel bible, mask, baby wipes, latex gloves, coverscent, bright eyes, saw, zip-ties, rope, cell phone,to many flashlights, xtra batteries, solitare and poker game, and a whole bunch of other stuff. sounds like mine.but when im digging in it for what i need t pick up something and say why is this still in here, i never use that. but if i take it out today i will need it tomarrow

Pretty much all the above. ................and..............some Benadryl tablets. Everyone should carry some of these. Never know when a wasp or a bee, a spider or snake might want a piece of ya! And you just never know when that allergic reaction might hit. good idea , especially for those of us allergic to bee stings.

I carry pretty much the same as everyone else and like everyone else I hardly ever open the bag, but it I need it or want it, I have it.
I like the benadryl idea. DeerOps and I both got stung by bees this year and his mouth swelled almost shut as did his side of face. I am adding to my list...
Like one of the guys wife that laughs at him, my kids laugh at me. I pack, unpack and pack again.

If I took those ya'll would find me hanging from the tree by my harness. Don't know what it is but I take those and the day passes real fast and I couldn't begin to tell you what happened!

I think it's funny how much stuff you can accumulate over one hunting season in one back pack. My backpack may start out at the beginning of the season at about 5 lbs but generally by the end of the season its up to 15 or 20 just from everything I have found in the woods or at home that I thought I might need or use. I usually only clean out my backpack before each season begins and always seem to find something I have been looking for. Never fails to check the hunting backpack last.
