squirrel questions

im a fairly new hunter and i have a questions about squirrels.i was told not to hunt them before the first freeze because of weebles(?) in the meat.what are these things?where in the meat do you find them?anything you can tell me would be greatly appreciated.ive been putting a 7 year old off for several weeks now and need to know all the particulars on this.thanks in advance.

Warbels (Bot Fly larvae) are not in the meat, but between the skin and muscle. They do not affect the meat at all but look bad to most folks.
The Bot Fly lays the egg below the skin on squirrels and several other animals, where it grows as a larvae and comes out of the skin after it grows.
They seem to be more common when hunting near where cattle are found.
They will be gone by the time cold weather sets in.

had him out yesterday and today and not a squirrel in site.i figure its because of the wind.any other time theyre would be 15 or 20 running around in our woods behind the house.

They look like huge lumps or tumors or something. Funny thing is, if you shoot a squirrel that has one on it, after the body temperature drops, they will crawl out of the squirrel.
I wouldn't advise letting the little one see that, because it is a pretty gross looking creature. The small ones are usually at least the size of large marbles. I've also seen them in rabbits killed at the first of the season.
Normally I'd say you run no risk of seeing any in November. With the weather being rather warm, I'm not sure whether this is true or not. My brother and I took a single squirrel a few weekends ago, but it did not have one in it. That doesn't really mean anything, though.
If I had to make a guess, I'd say we've had enough cold spells to probably get rid of 90% of them by now in most places in TN.
