My son used a 240 gr Hornady XTP Mag (Thompson Center version) with two 50 gr 777 pellets to get complete passthru and heavy bloodtrail on a nice doe at 45 yards. I used 300 gr Hornady XTP mag with 110 gr 777 loose to take a 1.5 yr old buck at 70 yards, also complete passthru with very heavy bloodtrail. Both exit holes were close to size of entrance holes, but they were rib shots that hit no heavy bone.

Both rifles are CVA Optima (non-fluted version).

We butchered the doe today...Joe says it was 60 yard shot, not 45. Entrance was behind the left shouldner, but the exit went right through the center of the shoulder blade. There were many bone fragments and a couple very small lead chips in the hole.

Excellent.

I use the 44-300 XTPs and I love them. I took a nice doe Saturday with them and the blood trail was perfect as always.

I shoot the same Hornaday 240-grain XTP's (.44 cal + sabot) and 100 grains 777 (2 50-grain pellets) as your son and always get a pass through. Been shooting them for about 15 years. Shot a big doe Sunday evening at 98.5 yards (yes I ranged her) and she dropped in her tracks with a complete pass-thru.

How are the Hornadys to load after the first shot? I'm shooting the Shockwaves (took two during the first season with good results- both pass throughs, one high shoulder shot that dropped in its tracks) and they're not as easy to load as PB.

Out of my Encore the 2nd shot is semi-okay but after that, good luck.

My son killed one opening morning with same bullet and so much blood was squirted out that you would get it on you tracking the deer. If I ever decide to shoot sabots that's what it will be.
