1. Zeiss 2. VX III 3. Bushnell 4200 4. VX II 5. If a VX I is 400 dollars you are getting ripped!
Dont forget the Nikon Monarch line! I would put it # 3 if it was on your list.

I'd buy the VX-III...
But you can get more bang for your buck than you realize...
Remember Leupy scopes are lifetime guaranteed and the company sticks to it more than any other company out there. That being said, you can get a used, but like new Leupy VX-III 2.5-8x36 for around $300-330. I paid $300 for the one I bought this past summer.
For $400, you can easily get a VX-III 3.5-10x40 in new or like new condition. That's probably where I'd lean towards.

For $400, I would buy a Bushnell Banner and have $330 left to buy another rifle, which I just did Thursday for $295(after rebate). Rem ADL synthetic .270, with a 24" barrel. A great goat combo. But then again, yellow mustard suits me just fine as opposed to Grey Poupon. Whatever taste you're looking for. LOL

i just tossed a 4-12x40 banner in the trash. it quit holding zero. it was a good scope the 2 years i had it. This Banner that I just bought, is the most expensive Bushnell that I have ever bought($69.98 at Dick's). Come to think of it, its the most expensive scope of any brand that I have ever bought! I started with Weavers in the old days, then evolved into Bushnells, with an occasional Tasco, and then a Simmons or two thrown in. The Bushnells have been their bottom of the line Sportviews(although I think maybe in the old days, their Banners were their least expensive scope). The only individual scopes that I have ever had any problem with was a Simmons 8-pointer, which developed a loose eye piece lens which there was no way to tighten, and an old Weaver which started to fog interally. I have always thought that even the cheap Bushnells were good optics. I am "stepping up in class" however, as I have just ordered a Nikon Pro-staff via ebay for $134.63, primarily at the urging of my son. However, I still have a bunch of change to play with before I get to 400 bucks. May even buy another rifle with the difference. LOL

You can't go wrong with the leupold 2.5 x 8 x 36 VXIII or the Zeiss Conquest, both are great scopes.I personally don't care for any of the others.

Correction on the ebay price for the Nikon Pro-Staff. I was outbid on the $134.63 deal, but got a better deal on a "Buy now" for $126.49. Looks like I may be headed toward a Swarovski! LOL

Bushnell. I love the Rainguard. Zeiss has an etched glass reticle which is nice too, but it's a heavy scope. I've owned both and now have two Elite 4200s. The Rainguard is great on cold days when you breath on your scope by mistake. It doesn't fog over. You can get the 3-9x40 Elite 4200 for less than $300. I prefer the 1.5-6x36 for TN.

The best scope listed there is the Conquest, followed by the 4200.
