I bought a browning abolt micro-hunter in .308 cal for a back-up rig a few months ago. I have sighted the gun in with federal premium sierra gameking 165 grain. The gun shoots half inch 3 shot groups at 100 yards with these rounds but I am thinking about changing bullets before rifle season opens. Has anyone used the 165grain sierra gameking on deer? How did they perform? What are the "good and bads of this round? If they perform good on deer, I will hunt with them since my rifle shoots them well. Thanks for the help.

The Sierra GameKing is a great bullet choice, I shoot them in my 7 mag, I dont know of anything bad about this bullet, the soft point opens up quick on impact, then mushrooms to about twice it's orginal size and leaves an awesome internal wound channel. Most deer I have shot with this bullet have went right down in their tracks

It is a fine bullet, it actually holds together alittle to well for my tastes though. It jsut depends on what you like, I like mass trauma and a huge hole so I go with Ballistic Tips most of the time. I have killed a few with Gamekings though and they have done just fine.

I've killed a couple of deer with my 260 and 140 gr gamekings. Fast humane kills on both.

You know,a big part of the fun of being a gun nut is comparing loads, bullets, etc. But, in practice, has anyone ever used a bullet that did not perform adequately on the game for which it was intended WHEN PLACED PROPERLY? Obviously, I'm not talking about shooting a moose in the shoulder with a 55 gr .22 bullet. I personally have never had a bullet fail to kill the game quickly, when I did my part.

I've not had one fail to kill but I've had one fail to kill like I wished. I cranked a 200 gr. Hornady softpoint up to top velocity in the 35 Whelen and what a mess! The bullet's really intended for 35 Remington velocities and I learned the hard way.

I had a huge bullet failure from a muzzleloader. When the inline 45 cal. "magnum muzzleloaders first hit the shelves a while back I went and bought one. Looked at the bullet choices that Bass Pro stocked at the time and bought a few different choices. At the range I found that with 3 pyrodex pellets (150 gr.) it would shoot a group less than one inch with the 180 gr. hrnady xtp's. Opening day of muzzleloader I shot a good buck at about 200 yards dead in the shoulder. He went down, got up and ran off into the treeline. I never found much blood and couldn't find the buck. Later in the season I was talking to the man that hunts the property behind our lease. Turns out his son killed the buck later in gun season. They found a bullet dead center of the shoulder area that had penetrated about 2-3 inches in and fragmented everywhere. I killed a deer with the muzzleloader the second day of the season from 50 yards. It is the only bullet that I have ever recovered from a deer that I have shot. When I weighted the bullet it weighed less that 90 gr. Showing less that 50% weight retention.
