What caliber gun would be good for a beginning 6 yr old? What can get the job done on deer up to about 100 yds with minimal kick?

The 243 is a great all around caliber. Make sure you use a tough bullet if you go with a small caliber, Barnes TSX or Partition.

This question is asked multiple times on multiple forums every year. Usually overlooked in the ensuing discussion about calibers is the fact that the FIT of the firearm to a young and/or small-statured shooter is at least as important as the caliber. If the shooter cannot hold the rifle comfortably and properly, he/she will be inaccurate and will likely be punished far worse by whatever recoil is present than would be the case with a properly fitting rifle.

I agree with you that it is important, but if you found a good starting caliber, you could then find a model that would fit the youth!

Razorback54...A friend of mine's son killed a doe last year and a spike this year and both were killed with a .223. Not sure what bullet he was using.

My 260 kicks very little, I would not be afraid to let the smallest frame kid shoot it. Just a hair bigger than the 243. Get the 260 in a Rem. 700 youth model and you have a winner.
