I just got a call from my doctor with news I didn't want to hear. I'm glad to find out why I've been having bad headaches for the past couple of months but it means no shooting for now. I had an MRI done today at my own request and found out that I have a chronic subdural hematoma which is an accumulation of blood around the outside of the brain caused by leakage in a blood vessel. I've been on Coumadin for years and this time it's slowed me down. I don't wind up going into the hospital today as long as my symptoms don't get worse for now. I knew when I got a call from the M.D. only an hour or two after the MRI that something was up. Common sense tells me not to let loose a few 35 Whelens or 300 RUMs until I get permission. I hope this isn't long term. Maybe I can hunt from the ground with a crossbow? Next week will find out more. Your thoughts and prayers would be appreciated. This may not belong in the shooting forum but I post here more than anywhere else and know more of the regulars here. Thanks for listening to my "Whining".

Sorry to hear about that Whelen Man. I would certainly keep shooting if you are able at all. I would go after squirrels with a .22 and get a good .223 with a premium bullet for deer-it will work.

Good luck and God Speed. Plateau Hunter

Have to say, sounds like you're lucky that it was caught! Damage to the blood vessels around the brain is nothing to take lightly. Hope you pull through okay.

I think this may be a good excuse to hunt for a nice 243 for hunting. Most everything I've got is big boomers. I've got a 22-250 and a 223 but I don't think I want to try a 22 caliber for deer. Maybe a heavy or braked 7/08 might fill the ticket. I may need to do some trading if the wife will let me go. I can just see me in one of the club's two man stands with her sitting there fidgiting beside me. Like that'd work. I'll ask a lot more questions of the doc in the coming week about when and what I'll be allowed to do and what I can sneak and do. Thanks for everyone's help.

I just had the usual old man's annual physical, blood, urine, chest xrays, ekg, prostate, etc. last Wed afternoon, but no MRI. Have not received the Doctor's phone call or letter yet, so, who knows? On shooting the boomers, I shot a marlin 336, 30/30 this afternoon and a Marlin MR-7, .30/06 from a bench. The 336 scope kissed me twice between the eyes(no blood), and the bolt action was like a BB gun. So, I guess I was kind of loosey goosey with my hold on the lever action and was shooting the bigger rifle properly, because it was a bigger rifle(and also because it probably fits me better). Hopefully, you will be back amongst the big bangers soon. Hang in there.

I have a ruger77 .243 in a hogue stock that literally does not kick at all! Of course, you have to have someone along to help you lift it! LOL

I'll find out today whether they'll let me go for opening day of Muzzleloading Saturday. I always look forward to that every year and muzzleloading is usually when I put my venison in the freezer. If they give me the go I've already got plans for a lighter charge and lighter bullet for the muzzleloader to reduce recoil. No 300 grain Hornady XTPs at 2200 fps with a heavy charge this year. I'll back down to a 240 at 1800 or so which makes a big difference. We'll see the verdict on what happens today. The wife may have to drive me to opening day. LOL

Thanks for all the support folks! It helps. I'm bored to death doing nothing. I usually don't do a lot but doing nothing stinks.

Doc's office says I shouldn't go tomorrow and to wait for later in the year. However another opinion I received (mine) says it will be OK to go if I take it easy and get someone else to drag out my monster buck for me.

I missed most of the gun season many years ago with a disc operation. As soon as I was able, I compensated for my "loss" by going on a boar hunt in February. In the final analysis, only you know if you can do it. However, let common sense dictate what you do. Don't kill yourself for one day in the field. And, if your desire to hunt overides good judgement, good luck. LOL

Through the good medical advise given by myself I did go for a little while Saturday morning. I downloaded my muzzleloader with a light charge and decided only to shoot if I should see a decent buck. That didn't happen. I saw one doe and had turkeys all over me all morning. You know how when it rains it pours. I came home and when trying to take my boots off in the garage I couldn't bend over because of the head so I tried to pull my boot off by pushing with one toe against the heel of the other boot. POP! Now I also have a torn hamstring to get well and another visit to the ER. My wife was in the next room and heard it pop. I guess someone's telling me I shouldn't go hunting. Now I can't walk to get there. At least the wife will be happy!

I suppose that somebody is trying to tell you something would be redundant at this point.
