I had a huge bullet failure from a muzzleloader. When the inline 45 cal. "magnum muzzleloaders first hit the shelves a while back I went and bought one. Looked at the bullet choices that Bass Pro stocked at the time and bought a few different choices. At the range I found that with 3 pyrodex pellets (150 gr.) it would shoot a group less than one inch with the 180 gr. hrnady xtp's. Opening day of muzzleloader I shot a good buck at about 200 yards dead in the shoulder. He went down, got up and ran off into the treeline. I never found much blood and couldn't find the buck. Later in the season I was talking to the man that hunts the property behind our lease. Turns out his son killed the buck later in gun season. They found a bullet dead center of the shoulder area that had penetrated about 2-3 inches in and fragmented everywhere. I killed a deer with the muzzleloader the second day of the season from 50 yards. It is the only bullet that I have ever recovered from a deer that I have shot. When I weighted the bullet it weighed less that 90 gr. Showing less that 50% weight retention.
