I guess I should have asked this here instead of the deer hunting forum.
The land I hunt is definately at the max. for carrying capacity. I'm thinking the ratio is around 4:1-5:1 doe to buck. Should we be taking 5,6 does for every buck killed? I would like to eventually get the ratio down to 3:1 or 2:1.
Is there a definate age when does quit breeding? Or are young does better to take?

Take the old ones, but unless your neighbors are practicing too, or unless you have 1000 acres+ I'd say your waistin time with ratios

"most" of the neighbors are in agreement and looking for bigger\more mature bucks. it's between 500-600 acres between 4 landowners with mine being the largest piece in the middle of it all.We all have agreeded to only allow our kids {3} 1 imature buck apiece to keep their interest peaked.I've tried to kill at least 1 doe for every buck killed for the last 4-5 years but it just doesn't seem to be enough.Maybe like stated it just doesn't matter on a piece of prop. this size.

I bet BSK will disagree. I think his property is less than 500 acres.

How do you know the ratio is 4:1? Is this observed sex ratio or have you completed a photo census?

Depending on the habitat type you can have good success on smaller tracts of land (less than 1000 acres). However I'd bet the actual ratio is much better than you think it is if the above numbers are only based on what you are seeing in the field.

We have just over 1000 acres and have killed a total of 60+ does in the last two years (~10 bucks 2.5+ during same period). We are still getting alot of doe pics on our cameras and doe observations were high during spring turkey season. IMHO we couldn't kill them all if we tried cause they're getting smarter each year.

Well said S&S. Our does are getting smart enough that you can't do it (kill enough) with a bow anymore! \:D

No, healthy does will breed until they die.

I was in a club in hardeman county a few years back and a biologist came in and said there were too many does and told us to kill does until we thought we had killed too many then kill some more. He did tell us how many but I don't remember how many he said , but that was his first statement. \:o

TC4ever,

Observed sex ratios aren't a true measure of the actual sex ratio, but for the hunter they sure are "real" enough!

As others mentioned, killing does will not only improve the health of the whole herd but will increase daylight buck movements. In fact, I would rather hunt a property with 10 bucks and a balanced sex ratio than a property with 20 bucks but a skewed sex ratio. The 10 bucks in the balanced sex ratio herd will be more active during daylight than the 20 bucks in the skewed sex ratio herd.
