I shall give it a try.
7mm-08
Rem Case
Barnes 120 gr X with 3 grooves.
OAL is 2.86

Set the die to seat 2.80. When seated the bullet hits the case right at the top of the top groove in the bullet. Not enough there to crimp as bullet still loose.
Reset die to seat 2.76 and that hit midway. Now for some reason when crimped the bullet will not move up and down in the case but I can twist it with my fingers. More crimp needed I thought so I made it crimp a little more. Pulled the bullet out of the case on the next two even with a little more crimp. Added more crimp and it pulled the next bullet out of the case. Each time I had to screw the seater plug down to get the bullet to drop out.
Loaded Barnes in a 270 wsm and never had this problem before.

May just be the 7mm bullets or it could just be the dies. Ive had that happen many a time and it turned out to be the dies.
Stop using barnes and your problem is fixed

Probably the dies... first time you've used them? What brand?

I've heard problems with some people getting dies out of spec, sending them back to the factory who agreed, then replaced the dies free of charge.

Why bother with crimping? In a 7/08 recoil shouldn't be that much to cause bullets to move in just a non-crimped case. Accuracy will probably be better without the crimping also. Lee likes to push crimping and crimping dies, and most other dies can be used to apply a neck crimp, but I see no use for them other than heavy recoiling magnums on bullets with a cannalure or bullets for tubular magazines. That bullet shouldn't be loose when the bullet is seated any reasonable length into the case. I take it you mean that the base of the bullet is seated and the top of the case is at the top of the uppermost groove nearest the bullet tip. If that is the case and there's a problem you've either got a problem with die or bullet diameter. A micrometer would tell in a moment. Just some random thoughts. Let us know.

Whelen Man it was a problem with the die as you stated. I did not mean to imply I was crimping the bullet but I know that is what I said. I just put a little pressure on it to see it that would stop it from being loose.

Called RCBS. They told me to take the seater plug out and buff the inside with a drimmel tool. I did notice a pretty good ring on the bullet. More than usual. I gave it a good buffing inside and tried it again. Perfect. They said the Barnes X was a little different design and did not exactly match the seater. The seater was new and hanging on the bullet causing stress. It would actually pull on the bullet during the downstroke.

All fixed.
