Will need to be new. Think I want a sling and a crack cocking device too. Any more suggestions?

YEP,... don't ask for recommendations!! Go to a retailer that sells every kind of crossbow made and buy the one that fits you the best.
I went to bass pro and compared every crossbow they had. When i was done ,.. i preferred the excalibur due to weight, package, feel, and maintenance. AND,.. it was in my price range for a top quality crossbow. I recommend you to do the same. Try them all .........

Go test drive all the brands and models that you can and then make up your own mind.

I bought an "entry" level, 180 lb crossbow, just to see if I liked crossbow hunting. That way I did not spend a bunch of money I did not have, for something I would not utilize to justify the cost. I have done alot of research and reading/listening to peoples opinions. What I have found (my opinion)is this:
1: compound crossbows, no matter how high dollar, have moving parts which will eventually break. But compounds have a better power-to-distance ratio based on the power curve. It is basically the same as a compound vs recurve senerio.
2: recurves, such as excaliber brand, have speeds like compounds but not quite as effective ranges.
3: Prices vary greatly, you get what you pay for.
4: Crossbow arrows will hit like a sledge hammer, but after 35 yds or so, start dropping like a rock (for the most part).
My opinion, for what it is worth, is that next year I will save up and buy a top end Excaliber. The only real moving part is the string, which I can carry extra. The killing range is in the range that I shoot.
If you go to: http://www.huntingnet.com crossbow section, talk to a gentleman up in Canada named "DNK". He has forgotten more about crossbows than most people will ever know. I was having trouble getting a spare string, and he made me an excellent one.
For what its worth......

Ball park figures $300 up to $700 fer decent ones. You can go higher priced.Good compound style CB's Ten Pt. Parkers and Hortons. All Parkers are good priced, Hortons start with exploer 150 and up on their models, Ten Pts. TL7, Pro Fusion, Slider. Any Excal model is reasonable and they all shoot good.
